Adam Schiff: A True Hero for Our Times

American right wingers have a lot of hate buttons they push just about daily on talk radio. Limbaugh has been doing it for years, but there are reactionaries on local stations and other syndicated hate-and-fear mongers who fill up the hours for commuters who substitute that noxious right wing blather for actual news or facts. One of their treasured hate buttons is the entire state of California. It's one of the coastal places that harbor all the God-and-gun hating liberals, the feminists, the faggots, not to mention those entertainment industry people who are pumping so much love-and-kindness bullshit into our children's brains. Add to that the tech giants who've addicted the kids to staring into screens so they don't ever listen to what their parents tell 'em and you've got the source of most of our problems pinpointed pretty precisely. When it comes to fucking up America and keeping it from getting anywhere close to great again, California is ground zero. After all, Jane Fonda lives there, doesn't she?

Add to that the fact that Nancy Pelosi comes from San Francisco, the worst city in the whole damn country. Her name alone can give most right wingers the shivering fits. The vilification directed at her from the right has been constant for a long time now, but it really ramped up when she first became Speaker of the House. Trump echoes the hatred for her even more loudly since she quite literally stood up to him in a roomful of men who were sitting down, looking embarrassed at how she dramatically spotlighted their collective cowardice, complicity, and collusion.

Now add to that bill of particulars against California the emergence of Adam Schiff, now-famous California congressman, the polar opposite of a guy like Devin Nunes, also of California. In fact, Nunes represents a district not all that far as the crow flies from Schiff's district in the San Gabriel Valley. Otherwise, they are light years apart in honesty, integrity, intelligence, patriotism, and any just claim to the title of public servant. Nunes, as we know without doubt or argument, works for his own self-interest, and the interests of Donald J. Trump, not the best interests of his constituents (except, in a narrow sense, the big farmers and ranchers in and around Tulare County, a right-wing stronghold in the San Joaquin valley).

Hard to think of men more different that Nunes and Schiff. Their divergent characters turned the whole drama of the House Investigation into a hero v. villain melodrama. Much remains to be learned about Nunes' villainy, but there can be no doubt that Adam Schiff has behaved heroically, a true profile in courage, and a man capable of rare and much-needed eloquence.
