One of the prosecutors in Donald Trumps impeachment trial insisted on Sunday that the countrys fate is hanging on the outcome of the showdown now taking place in the US Senate, in which she declared the case against the president regarding his conduct with Ukraine overwhelming.
Zoe Lofgren, a California congresswoman and one of the senior Democrats presenting the evidence against the president for abuse of power and obstructing Congress, said senators trying the case needed to hear additional witnesses and evidence this week in order to provide the impartial justice that America depends upon.
Trump is accused of pressuring Ukraine to investigate his domestic Democratic political rivals, especially 2020 election candidate and former Vice-President Joe Biden, and has refused to allow his most senior aides to testify in the process, despite court challenges by the Democrats in the House, who initiated the impeachment process last September.
Its for the senators to find out all the information I think they would want, Lofgren told CNNs State of the Union politics program on Sunday morning.
But heres the thing, the chief justice of the United States [John Roberts] presiding over this trial, if he signs a subpoena for a witness to come, were going to get that witness
promptly. Were not going to be in court for three or four years.

(5,271 posts)Outrageous if Senate Repubs try to shut trial down this week and acquit despite all the new damning reports coming out about Trump's actions and threats and the Bolton allegations indicating lying by Trump and Barr and Mulvaney and others to coverup the wrongdoing.

(7,434 posts)While Trump is obsessed with his own self-interest, so is Putin, but those two agendas can and will diverge. The trial and the pressure for witnesses, AND Trump's defiance of more input into the trial, plays nicely with Putin's maneuver to keep the focus on Trump, and not on... Putin. So Putin is much more willing to convince Trump, through McConnell, or through phone calls, or whatever, to stonewall everything-- as a barrier to any scrutiny of Putin's conduct.
Trump doesn't know this. Trump is being used by Putin just as the GOP is being used by Trump. It's a parallel process.
