"SNIP....
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) encouraged Virginia counties unhappy with the Democratic-controlled government in Richmond to secede from the state and join his, The Hill reports.
Said Justice: If youre not happy where youre at, come on down. If youre not truly happy where you are we stand with open arms to take you from Virginia or anywhere you may be. We stand strongly behind the Second Amendment, and we stand strongly for the unborn.

(118,682 posts)the people choose how to be, not when the power mongers through politicians choose how they want people to be. We celebrate civil society and an informed electorate.

(63,221 posts)the 60's efforts were started to clean up the river with the formation of the Charles River Watershed Association.
"In 1995, the United States Environmental Protection Agency declared a goal of making the river swimmable by 2005. In 1996, Governor William Weld plunged, fully clothed, into the river to prove his commitment to cleaning up the river. On November 12, 2004, Christopher Swain became the first person to swim the Charles River's entire length, in an effort to raise public awareness of the river's environmental health. In July 2007, the river hosted the Charles River Masters Swim Race, the first sanctioned race in the Charles in over five decades.
A combination of public and private initiatives helped drastically lower levels of pollutants by focusing on eliminating combined sewer overflows and storm water runoff. Since Weld's stunt, the river's condition has improved dramatically, although it was not deemed entirely swimmable by 2005."
I live less than a block away from the river and it's quite lovely, although I'm not sure I would swim in it. However there is no smell or visible pollution. The Esplanade is a beautiful park that runs along the south bank of the river where people run, bike, picnic and where the Boston Pops play on the 4th of July.

Seriously, the collective IQ of Virginia would increase by 40 points, and the collective IQ of West Virginia would increase by 3 points.
Yes, West Virginia is the only place that could take in the ignorant of Virginia and have it increase the intelligence of their own state.
Enjoy the coal ash water, lung cancer and emphazima.
God, I truly pray these folks take West Virginia up on this offer!

(11,936 posts)I'm a native WVian (I live in Ohio now) and you are not going to hear me take up for the state and its monoeconomic model based on coal that has been on a slow but steady collapse for 40 years. But the industry is already spreading coal ash water, lung cancer, emphysema and many other things all over Appalachia which already includes the same parts of Virginia they are making this idiotic, frankly unconstitutional appeal to.

(32,020 posts)WV was formed by succeeding from Virginia. Are you saying WV is an unconstitutional formation? Article IV, Section 3 of the Constitution expressly allows this and sets out the rules.

(54,403 posts)And they are so desperate to grow their tax base that they are willing to take the poorest parts of Virginia? Maybe the rest of Virginia might not object, but those living in the poorest parts of Virginia might not appreciate suddenly finding themselves part of a State that is in no position whatsoever to keep them as well off as they are now, much less improve things.

(9,114 posts)to leave W VA, and join PA. After all, WV DID vote for a Dem governor, and had one until Justice turncoated.
Come on over, join PA, you'll have a Dem Governor, like you voted for, again.

If you start from where the Maryland panhandle's most western & south part is, go directly west toward the Ohio. Makes a nice straight east west running southern border for newly allied PA congressional districts.

(9,114 posts)We could claim 6 to 9 counties under the west PA end of the 'T', in past elections. That changed in the last few presidential elections, but I'm not writing our people off there. The repugs didn't, or those counties wouldn't currently be 'red'.
Also, you're missing the point of this game the repugs are playing, Freedom. The idea is to insouciantly tell other parts of America to seceed from their lawfully elected governments, and join your territory which shares borders with them. The former 'Dem' is telling people under a new Dem governor to seceed, so I'm telling the former 'Dem's' people to join our Dem gov.
