Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI've watched every Dem convention since 1972.
My parents are big Dems and instilled in me an interest in watching these things as a kid, when I might have preferred watching the season premieres of Starsky and Hutch or Charlie's Angels. But politics was important to my parents, and so of course I went along with their wishes and watched the conventions anyway. And I (secretly) loved doing it. I always have.
This was the best Democratic convention I have ever seen. From start to finish, speaker after speaker hit the nail on the head with their facts and their ability to deliver those facts with convincing, heartfelt emotion.
I am pleasantly exhausted. I feel like, over the last three nights, I just watched The Lord of The Rings trilogy for the first time. And tonight Aragorn unsheathed his sword, raised it high in front of the amassed troops before him, and reminded us all that if you can't get motivated about anything else, then remember that this is for Frodo.
I have always counted myself among the cynical assholes on this forum. But I see I need to rise above that. Our President has done an exceptional job with the giant, flaming bag of shit he was handed when he came into office, and I will knock on doors, make calls, and do whatever I can to see that he is reelected this November and help him out.

(37,648 posts)but I wasn't sure (I have a bad memory). So it probably was, since I have that feeling. It was just expertly put together, thematic, each and every speaker a good one, on point. Participating audience. It was a sight to behold. A convention that others in the future will be judged against.

For the President. For us. For America.
Wow...

(62,444 posts)Yep.
Somebody done put that on America's porch, rung the doorbell, and run off.
And I have a pretty good idea who it was, and who it wasn't.

(81,238 posts)I've been jumping to my feet so many times, and gotten choked up so many times, I'm really kinda tired. But very happy! This was a GREAT three days! I feel almost like I had a vacation. Exhilarated, even!

(2,770 posts)I think I literally blubbered through the entire night tonight - emotions high, and in a very good way.

(53,776 posts)I thought it was great, too, from start to finish. I have a question for anyone with the answer. Has the Democratic convention always come after the repugs? It seems the convention that comes second has the advantage.

Thanks for the info, calimary.

Very apt. Very poetic. I shall steal it.

(14,887 posts)I was thinking the same thing after the President's speech. But the person watching w/ me doesn't know the books or movies.

(7,570 posts)I seem to recall that he was somewhat conservative. But he had survived World War I and knew firsthand the futility of war. And it's telling to me that the hero of his books is a literal "little guy" who has no conventional strength or power--just enormous courage, a desire to do what's right, and eight friends who offer their own lives to help him out.

(1,937 posts)Believe it or not I have watched political conventions since 1956.
This is the MOSTimportant one in my lifetime!

(2,983 posts)About the same time I became legal voting age. None of the conventions prior to this (that I've seen) compare at all, but I wonder how this convention would compare with conventions in the more distant past. Some are saying that Obama reminded them of FDR.
With what I know of history, there isn't any President I think more highly of than FDR, though Lincoln is a close second. Still... it was powerful, wasn't it? Amazing. Listening to Biden speak, then Obama immediately after... I'm something of a cynical asshole myself, or have been in the past. These brilliant powerful speakers though... they moved me to tears. As a person who almost never cries (I tend to laugh when I get hurt), at anything, I'm still rather in awe.
I'm a pretty nervous person... but I'll do my part. Maybe I can organize something at the University I'm attending.
Anyhow, I'm with you. I've long been ready to vote for Obama, but tonight (well, technically last night now) he invoked a sense of hope and inspiration within me that I have rarely felt throughout my life. I'm starting to believe we can actually accomplish things, that maybe we can face our challenges and overcome them.
Perhaps we give you hope, President Obama, but you definitely have a lot to go around. I believe in him, in the administration we have, I believe we can aim higher for a better today and a better tomorrow.

(11,816 posts)I remember listening to him and saying "Who IS that guy? He sounds like our next President". Went out and bought and read "Dreams from My Father" shortly afterward.
