VFW Demands Trump apologize for downplaying severity of TBIs

Washington (CNN)The Veterans of Foreign Wars is demanding that President Donald Trump apologize for downplaying traumatic brain injuries sustained by US service members in Iraq after Iranian missile strikes on American troops earlier this month.

Earlier this week, Trump said he does not consider potential traumatic brain injuries to be as serious as physical combat wounds, minimizing the severity of the injuries, saying he heard that some troops "had headaches, and a couple of other things, but I would say, and I can report, it's not very serious."

"The VFW expects an apology from the President to our service men and women for his misguided remarks," William "Doc" Schmitz, VFW National Commander, said in a statement Friday, following the Pentagon's announcement that 34 US service members have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries in the January 8 Iranian attack.

"And, we ask that he and the White House join with us in our efforts to educate Americans of the dangers TBI has on these heroes as they protect our great nation in these trying times. Our warriors require our full support more than ever in this challenging environment," Schmitz added.

The VFW, described on its website as America's largest and oldest combat veterans service organization, said TBI is a "serious injury and one that cannot be taken lightly."

On Friday, the Pentagon announced that 34 US service members have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries in the January 8 attack, which was in retaliation for the January 2 US drone strike that killed a top Iranian general.

I just googled "average age of VFW members". This is what I got -

67

Of the organization's 1.3 million members, the average age is 67 — and with more than 400,000 members age 80 and older, numbers will plummet further over the next decade without an influx of new blood.May 23, 2016

Congressmen know that they vote, and donate, in higher percentages than other groups.

It just seems like they’re a stubborn lot. I have a lot of VFW family members and it just seems most of them don’t give a shit about sensical things. Just: worship military at all costs. Support the lodge. Don’t tell me how much I can drink or smoke. I love, respect and admire people who join the military. Since I was a child I dreamed of doing it. Of enlisting. My change of heart was as a young adult. When I glossed over the papers I had to sign and how my recruitment officer kept creepily salivating every time I was in glancing distance of signing full on. In the end, I decided against it. I deliberately bombed the ASVAB, just to shake that recruiter off my back. He stayed on me for 6 mos. and then begged me to refer him to any friends I had. I was 20 years old then. And I’d already been certified in the Coast Guard Auxiliary out of Alaska.
I knew enough about the psychological breaking down and building up the military does in basic. I decided I didn’t want my psyche dismantled by anyone else other than myself. And I didn’t want to build up upon it through an institution.

I just asked the google the average age of their members. The results:

70

That is down to about 1.3 million today, and the average age of members is nearly 70. The American Legion claims 2.4 million members, down from 3.1 million two decades ago.Oct 19, 2014

what they’d have to say about THIS:

In a 3-minute video posted to his Facebook and Instagram accounts,
Eddie Gallaghe referred to some members of his former troops as "cowards"
and highlighted names, photos and — for those still on active duty —
their duty status and current units.

about TBI. They can explain to him until they are blue in the face why it is a serious injury....probably life changing. But he knows more about it and will not listen nor be convinced he was mistaken. I can see his administration issuing a statement (clarifying what he MEANT to say) just to get his ass out of a sling but apology is not a word in his vocabulary.
