Longtime Gwinnett sheriff will not seek reelection (Georgia)
Conway, a Republican who has held office for more than two decades, announced Tuesday he would not seek reelection this year. In the same statement, Conway said that one of his chief deputies would be running to succeed him.
But the sheriffs retirement sets up another wide-open 2020 race in Gwinnett, where Democrats are hoping to further expand their influence in a one-time conservative stronghold.

The Gwinnett sheriffs office is one of just a few Georgia agencies to participate in the program, which allows jail deputies to check the immigration status of detainees and, if appropriate, hold them for federal authorities. About one-fourth of Gwinnett residents are foreign-born, and detractors of the 287(g) program say it tears families apart and makes law-abiding immigrants fearful of speaking to law enforcement.

Like every other Republican candidate in Gwinnett, Solis may have a tough road to election.
Longtime District Attorney Danny Porter flirted with flipping parties and running as a Democrat but ultimately decided against it. Like Conway, Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash is not seeking reelection, creating an open contest for her powerful seat.
If Democrats win the chairmans race or flip either of the other commission seats up for grabs this year, theyll gain a majority on the five-member board for the first time in decades.

This is Georgia's 2nd most populated county. The County has been a republican stronghold for years. In 2018 Stacy Abrams won the County by 14 points. Representative Bob Woodall won (stole) the election by less than 500 votes and is not seeking re-election.
