donnie's worldview is a strict social hierarchy with men over women, whites over blacks, etc., and of course with him at the top.

when he insults a person or a class of people, the primary aim is to communicate and to enforce that the insulted people are in a lower class in the hierarchy.

so with bolton, he's trying to move him down from the "white, male, republican, on donnie's team" class down to the "dangerous/failure/traitor" class. if he succeeds in taking him down in the hierarchy, anything bolton says can be ignored.
