So, British Airways, Lufthansa, SwissAir and Austrian Airlines are halting flights to and from all of China (not just Wuhan). Did this happen with SARS or any other flu in recent memory?

Germany’s Lufthansa and its subsidiaries Austrian Airlines and Swiss are suspending flights to mainland China through Feb. 9 as fears spread about a new virus that has killed more than 130 people.

Lufthansa said in a statement Wednesday that the airlines will fly one last time to their destinations in China, giving passengers a chance to catch their flights and bringing crews back to Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

The airlines will continue to fly to Hong Kong as scheduled.

British Airways has also halted all flights to China and American Airlines has suspended flights to and from Shanghai and Beijing. They joined several Asian carriers that are either suspending or significantly cutting back service to China as fears spread about the coronavirus.

Air India and South Korean budget carrier Seoul Air are also halting all flights to the country, and Indonesia’s Lion Air plans to do the same. Other carriers including Finnair, Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific, and Singapore-based Jetstar Asia are slashing service.

Several flights to China on U.S. airlines have been affected by the coronavirus outbreak, with United, Delta and American Airlines issuing extended travel waivers to those scheduled to travel on affected routes. United is also canceling dozens of flights to China, with the White House reportedly considering a ban on all flights to the country.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) raised its travel advisory level last week to Level 3, the highest level, advising people to "avoid nonessential travel." There have been at least 60 cases of infection reported in 13 countries outside China so far, including five cases in the U.S., the CDC confirmed at a press conference on Tuesday.

On Monday the U.S. State Department also raised its travel advisory to Level 3, warning people to "reconsider travel to China," while the warning level for the Hubei province, home to Wuhan (where the virus was first identified) is at Level 4, the highest level. People are being told "do not travel to Hubei province," the U.S. State Department states.

The number of U.S. airports being screened for the coronavirus has been increased from five to 20, USA Today reported.

It doesn't sound like US airlines have completely canceled service to China, just some flights.

Given how info from the Chinese govt is usually sparse (especially in an emergency), it alarms me that THEY'RE alarmed.

British Airways canceled all direct flights to and from mainland China, joining a growing cluster of international carriers that have cut their routes as the country confirmed nearly 6,000 cases of coronavirus.

The London-based carrier typically runs one direct flight per day from Heathrow Airport to Beijing and another to Shanghai. Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office has discouraged anything but essential travel to China, excluding Hong Kong and Macao, and urged against all travel to Hubei province, where the crisis originated.

Indirect routes to China via connecting flights were still available on the British Airways website, and the carrier’s flights to Hong Kong were not affected.
