Throwing 20 home-made bombs and a child porn collection? 1 to 2 years in county jail

A chemical company owner who sent residents of upper Bucks County into a panic two summers ago was sentenced to up to two years in jail and a decade on probation on Monday in a plea deal that spared him from state prison.

David Surman Jr., 32, of Quakertown, was the focus of a monthslong FBI-aided manhunt in 2018 after residents in the rural tip of the county complained of mysterious late-night explosions.

He was finally connected to the bombs — some of which left large craters along country roads — when a state trooper spotted him and his girlfriend, Tina Smith, fleeing the scene of one explosion.

Surman pleaded guilty Monday to possession and manufacturing of a weapon of mass destruction and conspiracy to possessing and manufacturing a weapon of mass destruction. He also pleaded guilty to criminal use of a communication facility and unlawful use of a computer for a large cache of child pornography detectives found on an external hard drive while investigating the bombs.

As PZ Myers points out, he's white, and it's hard to imagine an Arab-American would get just 1 or 2 years in a county jail for that. This was not just a couple of kids having a laugh:

Larry King, a spokesman for the DA's office, said that office is now involved with the investigation, as are the county detectives. That agency joins Pennsylvania State Police, the FBI and ATF in the investigation into the 20-plus blasts that have baffled residents since April.

Pretty shocking that neither charge, the bombs or the child porn, gets more of a sentence, on their own.

David also says that he never had any malice toward anyone when he set those bombs, and that they were more like harmless fireworks than weapons of mass destruction. Tina, now 32, says she was acting with immaturity. So, you know, two years for David, no jail time for Tina.

And there's no such thing as white privilege, so stop saying that!

Apparently the motive was he was having a beef with the township for not allowing him to expand his business on his property. Doesn’t explain the child porn.
One of the unexploded bombs was found when a township maintenance workers ran over it with a lawn tractor. Could have killed him.
Believe me people up here are furious with the light sentence.

I get an image of someone in a jeep, tossing bundles of magazines out the window. Who writes these headlines?
