Once the "no" on witnesses vote is cast and they vote to acquit trump on both articles our republic is officially dead.
That is the genuinely terrifying aspect of this.
If Republicans let this stand, with trump's positions unchallenged, they have legally turned the office of the president of the United States into a totalitarian dictatorship that is answerable to no one.
Nothing is illegal and a president is free to do whatever they want, to commit crimes with complete impunity.
Trump has no intention of ever leaving

(1,853 posts)and then lose the battle. Ive not seen republicans demonstrate any honor, nor integrity for such a long time, that I dont expect them to do anything other than express concerns and fears, and and vote their party line, the cowardly surrender monkeys.
And then we are faced with assholes like Munchkin.

"And they can't get back at us cause the elections and the voting machines are rigged. Pas me some $100s to light my cigar."

(62,423 posts)they all believe GAWD has put Donny on the throne to save the country, the world and the universe. Can't let a puny oath stand in the way.
Remember this fall that it wasn't Murkowski, Romney or Collins that cast the deciding vote to make Donny above the law. It was each and every Repug senator. If your repug senator is running for reelection, he (less likely she) cast the deciding vote to make Donny King

(43,179 posts)I'm thinking equities markets may whimper, but the US Dollar may be in for quite a tumble if foreign investors ever figure out what's going on. Old King Trump is the secret sauce that makes capital flight a distinct possibility. Republicans are playing with fire and gasoline.

(6,888 posts)that once he is out of office he be federally charged AND CONVICTED of ALL his violations of Federal Law.
(And state laws as well, but Federal first.)
If they want to set a precedent that all this is perfectly OK, we need to set a counter-precedent that, no, it isn't.
And that goes for everyone inhis administration. Granted there is no DOJ memp preventing it from being done now, this is still Barr's DOJ and there would be no point.
We have already allowed this trend to go on for far too long. I won't say "drain the swamp" for many reasons (one of which being that swamps and wetlands are necessary for the health of the planet.) But I think we need to clean and disinfect the sewers.
