A Backlash Brews Against Phantom Hotel Fees

The tables may be turning on those maddening, meaningless hotel “resort” fees: For once, it’s the hotels instead of travelers who may face unexpected penalties.

Expedia has started penalizing hotels that charge mandatory daily fees but don’t include them in room rates by placing them lower in search results, leveling the playing field a bit with hotels that include their full cost in the advertised room rates.

Booking.com has just started charging hotels sales commissions on mandatory extra fees, reducing the incentive to hide add-on charges from basic room rates.

A 2019 bill introduced in the House of Representatives with Republican and Democratic sponsors would prohibit the practice that has spread from resorts to many downtown properties. In addition, Nebraska sued Hilton and the District of Columbia sued Marriott, part of an effort by some attorneys general to attack a now-widespread practice some call unfair.

1. Why can't Expedia just kick them out of their service?

Without full disclosure.

I remember my wife's uncle covered our timeshare fee when we purchased it from him for our week in Hawaii. He probably didn't have to do that, but he is a stand up guy even though he had no knowledge of it either.

I pitched a bitch even though it was a temp charge, left a very nasty rate on the booking site, the games they play.

but many times they reserve "special" rooms for those low rates. Rooms that have been flooded, have "funny" smells in them, or leftover chalk outlines still visible on the floor. I've had a few pull crap like that, and these weren't discount chains either! Then I have to go back to the desk, ask for a different room, but they seem to be "out" of those discounted rooms at the moment. That's when I usually get back in the car and drive someplace else.

I don't even want to think of air travel given all of the poorly disclosed or confusing multiple add-on fees that makes comparing airline rates pretty much impossible or an incredible ordeal ... The last time I air-traveled was about 15 years ago before they started all that crap.

Now to read that hotels and motels are doing this crap -- now I have no appetite for spending a week or long weekend somewhere.

And then there are more and more of us that are adverse to long-distance travel because of the greenhouse gasses -- a 1500 mile trip to San Diego and back from Minneapolis (3000 miles roundtrip) causes more GHG emissions than a sub-Saharan African country does per-capita in 1.8 years. Or 2.6 months from a European Union country per capita.

So yeah, travel industry, play your crafty little games, you fuckheads. And don't tell me about your phony carbon offsets.
