"SNIP.....
Jonathan Bernstein: The impeachment trial of President Trump moved to questions from senators on Wednesday. It wasnt an encouraging day.
The presidents lawyers moved closer than ever to simply embracing the idea that the president can do whatever he wants. Alan Dershowitz even went so far as to argue that since presidents always think that their re-election is in the national interest, they cannot be legitimately impeached for any use of their powers of office to aid that re-election. This would have been good news for President Richard Nixon. And surprising news to pretty much everyone throughout U.S. history.
It appears more and more that even if the House managers serving as the impeachment prosecutors are eventually allowed to call one or more witnesses, the trial will end after establishing the principles that the president may use the powers of the office any way he or she wishes to without constraint, and that presidents will no longer have any legal obligation to submit to congressional oversight.

(25,111 posts)A Democrat will win the presidency - 2020, then what say you Republicans. Karma is a bitch.
And there will be more damaging information coming forth. That is why Republicans are rushing and pushing a acquittal. Bottom line, shithole has been "impeach" and that will never be erased.
Republicans will be defending him all the up to the elections.

(11,495 posts)is corrupt, and they know the truth will put many of them in legal trouble, especially trump and leaders like Mitch.
If they get trump out of this mess, they will see the biggest blue wave in history come November. The people WANT the truth, except for the trump cult followers, and if they pull this off the vast majority of this country are not going to go along with it. Sooner or later the truth will come out, and they will pay.

(23,097 posts)All Democrats have to follow the law but no Repugs are held accountable is what the true aim is. Guarantee that is their objective and they seem to be accomplishing that with this cover-up. The only question is will America hold them accountable and even if we vote correctly, what will the final hacked tallies say? Sorry, I just feel so hopeless right now.

(11,495 posts)thats the they want us to do. The trolls here are doing their best to get people to give up and accept what is going to happen. We can't let them win.

(7,431 posts)by ambivalence, by distractions, by equivocations. Our alarm must be at a fever pitch, RIGHT NOW.
Reading the funnies won't help. Listening to Colbert won't help. Laughing at the cold open on SNL won't help.
I've been compulsive with repeating the simple phrase, "When the Senate acquits, the Constitution dies." This is not a call to "give up." This is a call to express alarm, outrage, and an urgent need to call the Senate's coming action as a national emergency.
The image I have is of an ant hill in which all ants in the colony go about their business in an orderly (algorithmic) fashion. Then someone kicks the hill, and the activity to save the colony goes into overdrive, with ants scurrying every which way, frantically trying to restore order and survive.
Trump and the GOP have kicked the ant hill.

(7,431 posts)WE ALL KNOW that an acquittal affirms the new reality of national governance: That Presidents are above the law, that Presidents are immune from accountability. That the Constitutional duty to impeach is no longer functional. That Trump will rule as an autocratic dictator. This is what the GOP wants. This is what they've wanted all along. Trump can now commit crimes left and right, and the GOP will give him absolute immunity. He's lawless, and he'll take full advantage of it.
All of the GOP supports this new definition of executive power. They all must know that when they vote to acquit, they are voting for a dictatorship. They are allowed to play all kinds of political games until they vote. Then it all gets real. For them, for us, and for Trump.
We're (likely) one day away from the end of the Constitution, the end of the United States of America, as defined by the founding documents. Enjoy every moment until then.
It's 90% certain that Putin has won, that Trump has won, that the GOP has won. Everyone else loses.
The one last hope is the witness vote. If there's a vote to allow witnesses, the death of the Constitution is delayed with no prognosis for recovery. Twenty GOP Senators have to give Trump the middle finger in order to preserve the Constitution. But there are enough GOP backbones to fill a thimble. They'll all march along to the beat of Trump's hand motions when he's flashing the white power symbol.
The belly of the country ought to be very upset right now. We'll hear siren calls for all of the nation to rise up and vote them out of office. Those sirens will be going off right after the acquittal. But it won't matter because the GOP will take the meaning of elections away. If they have to, they'll cancel the election to maintain power. They already have control over vote tabulating machines in several states, and can hack them without leaving a trace. They'll encourage Trump to use the Patriot Act powers to cancel the election.

(1 post)I think this could all play into Democratic hands in this election cycle.
"Not ONLY are they corrupt...but they have essentially defanged the impeachment process to protect their corruption."
The election will come down to which group of voters is bigger: those who think the Impeachment itself was nonsense or those who think the failure of the Impeachment was injustice.
This entire thing has become an electoral shorthand. Who will be more strategic about using it?

(11,885 posts)Crimes are not crimes when trump does them, and sounds very familiar to what Nixon tried to claim. Its not a crime if he does them. What next money laundering, murder, destruction of evidence are legal when he does them too?

(1,188 posts)as a president could proclaim that his every decision and every act he takes feeds into the importance of his reelection, and therefore he cannot be challenged on anything, criminal or otherwise since even the threat of an investigation or impeachment is beyond the capacity of Congress to implement since it would have a negative impact on his reelection chances.
