Judge To Woman Sexually Assaulted By Cop: ‘When You Blame Others, You Give Up Your Power To Change’

Lewis to Democrats: ‘We must march to the polls like never, ever before’

Arizona trial Judge Jacqueline Hatch, who was appointed to the bench by Gov. Jan Brewer (R-AZ), decided that Evans’ actions did not warrant jail time — sentencing him probation and 100 hours of community service. Evans also will not have to register as a sex offender. Yet, while Judge Hatch apparently did not view the disgraced former cop’s actions as particularly serious, she had some very harsh words for the woman he assaulted:

Bad things can happen in bars, Hatch told the victim, adding that other people might be more intoxicated than she was.

“If you wouldn’t have been there that night, none of this would have happened to you,” Hatch said.

Hatch told the victim and the defendant that no one would be happy with the sentence she gave, but that finding an appropriate sentence was her duty.

“I hope you look at what you’ve been through and try to take something positive out of it,” Hatch said to the victim in court. “You learned a lesson about friendship and you learned a lesson about vulnerability.”

Hatch said that the victim was not to blame in the case, but that all women must be vigilant against becoming victims.

“When you blame others, you give up your power to change,” Hatch said that her mother used to say.

The judge's comments are so insulting I'm almost speechless. The judge is actually saying that the victim is the one who has to change? What the serious fuck. "When you blame others..."? The only way to interpret that comment is that the judge is saying the victim should blame herself. Fuck you, Judge Hatch.

Only it isn't. We are going backwards.

And these women - what the fuck is wrong with these women? Is she advocating that women should stay in their homes to avoid being assaulted? Maybe we should all don burqas when we go out, & make sure we're accompanied by a male chaperon. Don't they see their hypocricy? They hate Muslims, but they are putting women in this country in a similar place.

You should be thanking this officer like the judge did by giving him a lenient sentence! You should be praying to the police! A cop would never impair his judgment by drinking eight beers straight! He wouldn't abuse his power by flashing his badge to get in a bar for free, and wouldn't arrest the bouncers for throwing his drunk ass out! And he would never sexually assault and harass a woman!

14. Shades of Archie Simonson...

1977 – Madison, WI
Dane County Circuit Court judge Archie Simonson became the first elected official in the history of the state to be recalled, and had to face a special election on Sept. 7, 1977.

The people of Madison were infuriated by the leniency of the sentence for three boys convicted of a girl's rape in West High School.

Simonson gave a "boys will be boys" speech while he sentenced the three attackers to parole and juvenile detention. He also criticized what he perceived as inappropriate dress in schools and a general atmosphere of promiscuity.

At the sentencing of one of the three teenagers he went on at length about sexual permissiveness, complained that attire worn by young women was of the type formerly seen in Chicago burlesque shows, and tended to shift the blame for rapes on to women.

"When You Blame Others, You Give Up Your Power To Change" is a valid concept, but totally inappropriate here. This is no better than blaming the victim's attire.

In what world does anybody think that is appropriate advice?

How hard is it to understand that women do not exist to service men, and sexual assault is the fault OF THE ASSAULTER, period?

That kind of ridiculous "logic" can be applied to ANY situation!

"If you hadn't been on the road, you wouldn't have been hit by that drunk driver."

"If you hadn't gone to the shopping mall, you wouldn't have been mugged in the parking lot."

"If you hadn't stayed at home, you wouldn't have been beaten by the robbers when they arrived."

WHAT. THE. FUCK?!?!?!?

but then blames the victim. Nice.

And the "when you blame others" line. That just makes me angry. He stuck his hand up her skirt. She believes men are incapable of controlling their hands around women so she should expect it? He isn't to blame for that? That's sickening and disgusting.

but nope. She said exactly that.

Wow. What an idiot.

"If you hadn't been there that wouldn't have happened to you" is true of every crime is it not? Does she give that advice to every victim?

If you hadn't been driving down that road that drunk driver wouldn't have hit you. Try to be more cautious.

Bonkers.

A) she's an idiot. What she says doesn't affect me.
B) I'm used to it. No male has managed to come of age in the US without being told many times that he is probably a rapist/pedophile in one fashion or another.
C) I know it isn't true so . . . meh. It reflects on the people who say it. Not me.
