by Jed Lewison
The only thing more pathetic than Mitt Romney's say-nothing speech to the Republican convention last week was his joyous statement this morning embracing today's tepid jobs report:
If last night was the party, this morning is the hangover," Romney said. "For every net new job created, nearly four Americans gave up looking for work entirely. This is more of the same for middle class families who are suffering through the worst economic recovery since the Great Depression.
"After 43 straight months of unemployment above 8%, it is clear that President Obama just hasn't lived up to his promises and his policies haven't worked," Romney continued. "We arent better off than they were four years ago. My plan for a stronger middle class will create 12 million new jobs by the end of my first term. America deserves new leadership that will get our economy moving again.
Leaving aside Romney's desperate need for a good copy editor ("We arent better off than they were four years ago"?), we actually are better off than we were four years ago. We're not yet where we want to be, but the difference between four years ago and today is dramatic.
Four years ago, everything was heading in the wrong direction, and fast. Between August 2008 and August 2009, we lost 6.8 million jobs and the unemployment rate skyrocketed from 6.1 percent to 9.6 percent. We haven't fully recovered from that economic crisis, but as this chart shows, we're headed in the right direction:
We're not yet where we want to end up, but we're better off than four years ago. Republicans made an epic mess of the economy, but it's being cleaned up. And the last thing we need is to put them back in charge.

In September 2011, Republicans blocked the American Jobs Act and up to 2 million jobs

Responding to the heavy media coverage of Clint Eastwoods bizarre rantings at the RNC a moment that largely eclipsed Mitt Romneys address adviser Eric Fehrnstrom and Newt Gingrich both said that Fridays jobs report could similarly undermine Obama.
I think the biggest news next week will not be the three nights of the DNC but it will be on Friday Were all hoping for good news but the odds are high that the unemployment rate will remain above 8 percent, Fehrnstorn said on CNNs State of the Union.
Meanwhile, on Meet the Press, Gingrich was more blunt:
I think the biggest event wont be his speech Thursday. Itll be the Friday morning jobs report. If that Friday morning jobs report is bad, itll drown his speech. You want to talk about Eastwood? Friday morning jobs report is a lot bigger event next week than Eastwood was this week.
Watch it:
<...>
Republicans have repeatedly blocked Obamas jobs legislation. In July, the Senate refused to allow a vote on the presidents American Jobs Act, which would have given incentives for companies to insource jobs rather than ship them overseas and by most reports would have stimulated GDP growth. As Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) reaffirmed in 2010, Our top political priority over the next two years should be to deny President Obama a second term.

It's a 'job-creator' plot not to hire. These people will destroy America by their greed and need to control millions of people.

(5,693 posts)Run ads with current jobs numbers and jobs numbers as they COULD have been, had the American Jobs Act, etc, not been blocked by congressional republicans. The blame needs to be placed where it belongs, in no uncertain terms. Name names in those ads. Name the infamous 15 who were present in that meeting. Quote McConnell again and again, until people have the names and quotes memorized. Run these ads in swing states and where down ballot races are competitive.
We cannot allow that treasonous strategy of tanking the economy just to ascertain Obama is a one termer to be successful.

(23,973 posts)If Mitt gets elected, that estimate will be radically revised downward by the CBO.
If the current economic policies move forward at the same rate, then 12 million new jobs will be created as the economy slowly expands.
Mitt is being disingenuous when he says that he will create those jobs.
Even if he does NOTHING, those jobs will happen.
