White House was completely caught off guard by Romney's vote. And within minutes of Romney's speech, the White House closed a Trump-Guaido meeting in the Oval Office that reporters had been invited to attend.
The fact that the House impeachment was completely partisan was a vital WH talking point. Romney removing Trump's ability to say the same in the Senate is huge, and now very eager to see/read Trump's reaction.

(13,503 posts)shouldn't they have been prepared for that possibility? He voted for witnesses. I've seen articles speculating that he was trying to rally the Republican senators to vote for witnesses. He's always seem to have an aversion to Trump.
It wasn't out of the realm of possibility (obviously now... but I always felt like he might vote this way). I feel like the White House dropped the bullet here, and they look foolish for not being ready for this possibility.
(They look more foolish for the idiot sitting inside the oval, but... you get my point. There are other people there who should have prepped for this!)
