Obama Convention Speech Sets Record for Political Tweets

A week after President Barack Obama shut down Reddit during his Q&A session, the Commander in Chief took Twitter by storm during his convention speech, setting a new record for political moments on the micro-blogging site.

At the close of Obama's Thursday night DNC nomination acceptance speech, Twitter exploded with 52,756 Obama-related tweets per minute after a hefty Twitter run during the three-day convention.

According to Twitter's blog, the convention garnered more than 9.5 million tweets, and the final day of the convention alone delivered about 4 million messages. The GOP convention pulled in about 4 million tweets in total, wrote Adam Sharp, Twitter's head of government, news, and social innovation.

In comparison, there were only 1.8 million global tweets regarding all topics on Election Day 2008.
