At the National Prayer Breakfast the speaker had spoken on the words of Jesus. Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you.
The President arose and said [contradicting Jesus] I do not agree with that! He then unleashed a torrent of invective against his political opponents, challenging the religious integrity of Senator Romney and accusing Speaker Pelosi of lying when she says that she prays for him.
I recognize that pastors and religious leaders must be very careful in making political statements. We are pastors to all the people. But like all other citizens, we have freedom of speech. I can imagine a conversation between Barth and Bonhoeffer when the Confessing Church was organizing in the days of the Third Reich in Germany. We recognize that religious leaders must be careful. But in this we cannot remain silent.
The self styled evangelical church has been domesticated by the President as was the majority church in Germany under Hitler. And my church, the United Methodist Church, is so preoccupied with our own internal struggles that that we may not be paying attention. But in my view, our situation in the USA is parallel to the situation in Germany in the early days of the Third Reich.
A number of Bonhoeffer scholars have claimed that this is a Bonhoeffer moment. When the President of the United States contradicts Jesus we need to pay attention.
I know that many here on DU want to tar all of the mainstream Christian churches with the same brush. I love my part of the United Methodist Church.

(12,712 posts)I tend to see that chastisement as appropriate and not just political, or intended to be so.
When a political figure puts on the sheep clothing to cover what a ravenous wolf he is and then proceeds to disagree with the scriptures because they don't suit his political agenda, then he is inviting a proper response from sincere religious communities who see him for what he is and don't plan to goose step along with that.
So, thanks to Mr. Grove for standing up and pointing out the blasphemy of this dangerous, hypocritical dictator we have in office. That's important, as was pointed out concerning the Third Reich. This time, it would be a good idea to at least thank and support those church leaders and members who stand up, speak out, and resist having their religion and beliefs misused for the cause of tyranny.
It should be more than obvious to most reasonable people, secular and religious, that Trump is only feigning any interest in religion for one purpose only and that is to get and hold onto the evangelical vote. However, not every Christian belongs to that particular group, nor are they totally representative of that faith.
I want to see more of that!

(37,161 posts)That would imply effort on his part.
Those churches have spent decades molding themselves into support systems for charlatans, grifters, and demagogues.
They'd already yoked themselves to a foul wagon. All he did was see it, say, "I can use that", hop aboard, and snap the reins. He didn't even need to steer.

(33,389 posts)Trump is an opportunistic parasite. This is how he has conducted himself for as long as he's been publicly reported. His entire campaign was conducted to take advantage of the machine the GOP built over decades and to take advantage of the greed of television execs.

(14,982 posts)That's a bit like the uselessness of all of the retired GrOPers who criticize Trump, while virtually every one in office is doing the opposite.

(5,403 posts)I was raised Methodist, and although I am not still a believer, I still hold strongly with the social justice stance of the UMC. My great-grandfather was a UMC minister, and was active in the south during integration and the very early days of the Civil Rights Movement. He caught flak for it, but never wavered from supporting equal rights for all. Although I never knew him, I am proud of that courageous stance, which I think is reflected in Methodism.

(13,871 posts)I had a fundie Trumper tell me once that all he had to do to see why he supports Trump unequivocally is look at his 401-k.
I asked him if he had ever heard of Jesus throwing the money lenders (i.e., bankers) out of the temple, and telling his apostles to give all of their earthly possessions to the poor.
His response was that, since I did not attend church, I had no right to base an opinion on the teachings of Jesus.

Donald is not known for church attendance either.

(8,844 posts)my wife who was a devout United Methodist, asked her pastor? if he agreed with the church denying a lesbian woman becoming a pastor?..........He said absolutely !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She told him she would be taking herself and her donations with her to another church........I think that he was more concerned with the fact that she made pretty substantial financial contributions to his church, than he was at losing a member.........

(36,130 posts)I'm glad this minister spoke up. I'm glad for the Senate chaplain's poignant prayers each the Senate Trial day. They are the only visible presence of religion's stand in America to keep Jesus' Second Great Commandment.
My opinion.

(937 posts)I try to live up to his example and remember his words. When that horrible man stood up and said he disagreed with JC, I was shocked. Nothing he does shocks me anymore but but but he stands up at the prayer breakfast and argues with JC and they all sit there applauding him. These are really dark and dangerous times.

(333 posts)If you are the potus and you have been told that you are a king, then you believe you are above the law and that includes God. The conservative right intends to plant trump in the white house until he dies. Then baron trump (damien thorn) will replace him. trump is getting information from william barr and others that is ultimately destroying our beautiful country. william barr is the devils helper (their is a name for it, i just cant think of it). trump will never bow down to God because that will make him look weak! He is already weak.. been weak his whole life, but since nobody will tell him....WE'VE GOT A REAL PROBLEM ON OUR HANDS FOLKS. AND IT'S SERIOUS.

(37,161 posts)It's not as if he's altered his behavior to woo them. All he's done is thrown out some buzzwords, and they've happily ignored that he has no knowledge and even less interest in their beliefs ("two Corinthians"?). But they've demonized everybody else and he's their Santa Claus who will hand them their pet political goals, like like ideological judges.
