(considering Portsmouth has a population per 2010 census of just over 21,000 that's pretty good):
PORTSMOUTH President Barack Obama called for the help of New Hampshire residents in attendance Friday at Strawbery Banke Museum for his first speech since the Democratic National Convention.
Introduced as the"Fab Four" by U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, flew into Portsmouth as the presidential campaign kicks into the home stretch following Obama's acceptance of his party's nomination Thursday night in Charlotte, N.C. The president arrived in Air Force One at Pease International Tradeport around 12:15 and hit the stage roughly 40 minutes later.
"This is going to be a close election. Only you can make sure that we don't go backwards. Only you have the power to move us forward," he said.
Portsmouth Assistant Fire Chief Steve Achilles estimated the crowd at Strawbery Banke at 6,000 people.
p.s.
PORTSMOUTH Shortly after he became the nation's first president, George Washington paid a visit to Portsmouth, arriving Oct. 31, 1789.
He arrived by stagecoach after a two-day journey from Boston, entering the city by coming up Middle Street to Congress Street, where he was greeted by crowds singing "odes in honor of the president," according to his diary.
Today, 223 years later, Barack Obama will be the only sitting president since Washington to visit the historic section of the city.
