Honor Bright?

Honor Bright? That’s the question I used to ask my kids when I was digging for the truth. We agreed it would be a family honor kind of thing and everyone who used those two words would be swearing to the truth. We didn’t overuse it because it was meant for special circumstances. Decades later, Honor Bright? is still in use in our family and we still honor its purpose. I can not put into words how much this one tiny tradition meant to me as I struggled to overcome a horrible childhood and create ways to have something of my own that I could count on and believe in.

Perhaps because traditions have been crumbling in TrumpWorld, i’ve been thinking a lot about how....Honor Bright?....would work on Donald Trump and his worshipers. I can’t imagine it would have any merit or any any impact. Those precious words would simply sit atop their heap of discarded values. It would mingle in with shreds of what used to be standards and principles. It would fall to the bottom and get mixed up with old guidelines for dedication, trustworthiness, respect.

Trump has made a maze out of a straight line, a comic strip out of a history book, a Thug Clubhouse out of the Oval Office. The flagpoles in Washington all hold wrecking balls and the Press Briefing is now a hateful tweet. Trump’s scorched earth policies compete with Global Warming, his devilish day to day antics allow many of us to forget there are still children in cages. I’ll be in the middle of processing Trump’s latest assault on our country, when it’s followed by another assault....sometimes within minutes.

The Republican side has no guard rails, no boundaries, no roadblocks. They have only an open-ended nod, a “yes” to whatever Trump does. Even if it’s illegal, obscene, disgusting, traitorous, dangerous. Even if Trump is acting like a dictator, a sexual predator, or a bully. Even if he lies, cheats, degrades, ruins. Even if it means an end to long-held traditions.

Some say Democrats’ infighting is normal. I’d like our new normal to be eagle-eyed on the bullseye, the one sitting in the middle of that giant, repulsive Trump poster.I want him to hear us coming, feel us breathing down his neck. I want him to be shocked beyond recovery that there ARE some boundaries, some lines he can not cross.

It didn’t take Trump long to go from buffoon to dictator. We should be even quicker at going from infighting to destroying even the tiniest speck of hope Donald Trump might have about his re-election.
