'He's a con man': MSNBC's Chris Hayes says Donald Trump is much weaker than he seems

Published 10 hours ago on February 10, 2020
By Cody Fenwick, AlterNet

Since President Donald Trump’s acquittal in the Senate last week, many political commentators have suggested that his electoral fortunes are rising while the Democrats’ 2020 prospects are dimming. But as MSNBC’s Chris Hayes argued Monday night, these claims have been greatly exaggerated.

While Trump’s poll numbers have ticked up slightly in recent days, it’s far from a dramatic bounce — and he still remains unpopular nationwide.

But the illusion that Trump is riding high, Hayes argued, is actually part of his strategy to get re-elected.

“The president is many things: He’s a bigot, he is a liar, he’s a narcissist but above all else,” Hayes said, “he has been a con man.”

And Democrats shouldn’t fall for it.

This needs to be repeated as often as it takes for people to wake up and understand that it's all a massive con. All one has to do is look at reality to know that he's weak. The polls show it. His behavior shows it.

Smoke and mirrors, lies and bullying, etc. trump can be beat, and he knows it. Now we have to fight off the lies and distortion being spewed by the liar and chief, and ignore the trolls and bots who will infest not only DU, but other sites on the internet.

I see more and more trolls jumping in here on DU. Just remember don't feed them. Ignore them.

I'm always surprised when he moves beyond the bothsiderism questions (though nobody is as bad as Chuck Todd at this) and makes a recentering and resounding "absolute statement" like this one. So much of what we believe is colored by the impacts of media--old and new--that reminders of the hype

In our current state of all crap all the time, it was good to hear that message. Sort of felt more grounded after watching that. We needed that.

Since then, his approval numbers really haven't improved.

We need some concerted GOTV efforts in key states, and nationwide, but it can be done.

With the GOTV efforts needs to be a constant reminder for people to stop falling for the lies and fear-mongering. Reality paints a different picture than what they want us to believe.

why spend $1 billion on disinformation? Why not use it to promote all the good that Trump has done if it's been so positive?

it would be calling him a traitor, which is what he is. He and his republican, traitor friends are loyal to something other than the constitution. They failed to uphold their oath of office. This should be the headline every day for the next 265 days.

The man sold out the country for his own gain. His supporters are riding his coat tails and are also traitors. And we have proof.

Quislings, confederates, seditionists, traitors. All one and the same.

"Con Men" is for children. Bigot and liar are cushioned.

And it's you MSM that push the ideas that his numbers are steady. It's you MSM that don't censure industry-wide FOX for their opinion network. And it's you MSM where the newscasters are involved in making the news stories.

The MSM has generally failed us. Even as one of your own was hack-saw murdered, his story fades for the shiny new bauble the traitor uses every new day.

He is a traitor. His followers are traitors. Your opinion-piece-masquerading-as-news is not helping.
