(34,074 posts)And one of the main public voices about life on the ship - decided it was safer than evacuating and being taken with people who may be contagious to the off-ship quarantine area.
. . .
Smith said hes skeptical about the governments plan to evacuate citizens on two flights to the US, since some of the travelers could be sick. . . . If we stay on board through next week, we will be tested and will likely come up negative, he tweeted.
But the U.S. Government instead wants to take us off without testing, fly us back to the U.S. with a bunch of other untested people, and then stick us in 2 more weeks of quarantine? How does that make any sense at all?
. . .
The lawyer, who has been posting daily updates about life on the locked-down ship, tweeted that American health personnel had visited his room until they learned, to their apparent surprise, that we had chosen to stay, at which point they moved on.

(5,008 posts)Then they were supposed to send the ones that tested positive to the local hospital. Many of the Americans that did not have the virus were concerned about being in closed quarters with those that could possibly have the virus but not test positive yet. They preferred to remain in their cabin until their 14 day quarantine was over.

(51,559 posts)This is NOT the way to quarantine people. Holy crap. Those poor people.
Anyone who tests positive should be hospitalized. Anyone who tests negative should be evacuated to their home country, immediately.

(34,074 posts)Not everyone on the ship agrees with you.

(51,559 posts)First. I'm shocked that everyone has not been test. That is insane. I said everyone who tests positive should to be hospitalized and everyone who tests negative should be immediately evacuated. That necessarily implies everyone must be tested. I can understand why he doesn't want to get on a plane with people who have been sitting in that petri dish of a ship and have not been tested to confirm they are negative for the virus. But I think he is overestimating the safety of his cabin. There is some indication that the virus can pass through pipes. Plus, he must interact with crew, who mingle amongst themselves without masks and aren't following quarantine rules. It is an insane situation on that ship.

(16,881 posts)Many people are testing positive on the ship, but that is because we are testing everyone onboard, regardless of their medical condition, said Shigeru Omi, the chief director of the Japan Community Health Care Organisation. And 70% of those testing positive are not showing any symptoms at all....

Macau is just a massive city - I hope it's really true they have no new cases, because hey, that's cause for hope for the rest of the planet - they have, of course, a brazillion restaurants and hotels staffed by tons of workers (I was one of them, in my day!) - so they all just went two weeks without a paycheck
Go Macau!

(14,961 posts)I don't know what their endgame is, other than protect the economy at all costs. The numbers are predictably going down every day, yet they are keeping these draconian lockdowns in place. No way they would lock down 760 million people (10 percent of the world) over 1700 deaths. I realize you know all this, thanks for letting me vent.

(13,524 posts)(and Wuhan in particular) BUT, I haven't heard that Macao has suffered any major outbreaks? - which gives me that tad of "hope" - and, as you say, it could just be the need to keep the money flowing, no matter the cost...well...we shall see...

(14,961 posts)out of Wuhan gets worse every single day, the content that slips by all the forms of censorship and then promptly gets removed, is horrifying when I have been able to catch it. Many brave citizens over there, trying their best to speak out and defend their fellow citizens. All of it is so damned heartbreaking.
I'm also beginning to wonder, if this isn't how they will handle us here. A lot of people already don't trust the numbers here, let alone the government.
