Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.

(1,828 posts)We need to get back; the fairness doctrine of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, was a policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses to both present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that wasin the FCC's viewhonest, equitable, and balanced.

(43,281 posts)His speeches and thought unplumbed or forgotten to a very great degree. As historians synthesize material from his contemporaries FDR's decision-making processes become evident. He thought far more about democracy than he is ever given credit for.

I'm reading Nigel Hamilton's trilogy on FDR at war. He juggled people and ideas like you or I choose dinner. Few knew what he was thinking, yet he got from everyone what he needed. He won World War II, he managed munitions, allies, commanders, Stalin and Churchill. Churchill wanted empire, FDR wanted democracy and self-determination, hence the United Nations. FDR planned around Churchill's considerable military blunders, FDR knew we needed time to build materiel before responding to the Japanese, so he did what Hitler never thought he would do - so confident that he declared war on the US - which is to fight in Europe First. He had a plan post-war before anyone was thinking about it. He stated in many places he wanted world peace for several generations.
Incredible revelations in the book too, or perhaps because I'm not aware of them. MacArthur shook down the Philippine president for half a million in cash - into his bank account. Not much was done about it.

(2,496 posts)government. They want to disarm democracy by making voters cynical. When Reagan said Government isnt the solution, its the problem! just substitute the word democracy for the word government and you reveal the true agenda of the right. Of course, they have no problem with government when it serves their purposes.
