If there is no vision, the people perish...

This phrase is carved into a local community building nearby, and I was thinking about what it might mean to our nation.

It seems to me that Obama has the vision for us, for our future.

And Romney? He might have a vision......for the one percent. What he wants for us, he might reveal......after the election, should he win it.

I know which one works for me.

I don't want our people to be fragmented, divided, fighting against each other. I am sure that Romney's vision would bring that to pass.

Just my musings on this Friday night...

Where is the building and why do you think they used that quote? I think it was Rev. Al who mentioned it today related to the bible

It's a community center now; it used to be a school, probably a grammar school, long ago. It's in a neighboring town here in SoCal.

I think it's highly appropriate, especially on a school. The children are learning what it means to have vision, to see the issues that are larger than the self.
And yes, it is biblical.

Because if we do, that means he won the election.

And that would never do!

who did the things accomplished in the last 4 years.

I should go look up the transcript and pull that out of there, but perhaps you can recall a brief litany of accomplishments during his administration each one of which he ascribed to us.

That is a vision I can commit to. It's interesting that it is also a vision that has some difficult political implications for him, as, since there are a wide variety of Americans, the things that we do will always bear the traits of our differences with one another, but since it is a vision of doing, that is, a vision of behaviors, actions, verbs, it is also open ended development that grows out of the people's own commitments to living their visions of their own lives, NOT someone else's vision of what our lives should be according to them, not the lives that the 1% deigns to bestow upon us, but what we actively share amongst us along with whatever our differences are. Class mobility in such a world would be different, don't you think, because there would be more options. I hope.

In art, my daughter tells me about the importance of "imperfection" to a creative event/experience. That gives me hope for our differences, the imperfections if you will, amongst us, which, through the lively motive of freely chosen commitment, can enhance our vision verbs, can enhance the discovery of our visioning.

Thank you.

I really like what your daughter said about imperfections among us. I can see that, since we will always have them, we should celebrate them and use them to enhance the discovery of our visioning...I'm using your words here, because I respect them.

My students and my own 2 kids have taught me a lot. Daughter was very willful from an early age, so I really had to learn from her, or suffer an un-ending struggle otherwise. She has her own successful design business now which she runs from her home in the northwest. I also belong to a very very large family, so I know many young people of many different types. I am concerned about what they need. This is one of the reasons that, despite all of the difficulties and differences, I trust Barack Obama. It seems clear that he authentically understands that this isn't about him; it's about us and, yet, he also understands, as he said last night, that he IS the President. That's a good dynamic balance.

On the contrary our differences are what makes the USA the greatest nation on earth.

I'm glad the Italians brought over lasagne I'm glad the Jamaicans brought over details and reggae.
our differences aren't something we should look at negatively. When it comes down to it there are as many kinds of Americans as there are Americans. all 312000000 of us. and yet we are all one.. E pluribus Unum. That's not just a slogan on our money. that's the essence of America. Out of many , one

I for one am glad that no one else is just like me. I'm also glad that everyone else is just like me

Its one of those things where either you get it or you don't.

I don't think differences are imperfections, just thinking about process challenges when different people are trying to do things together, a bit of a "hang over" from being around our Occupy I guess.

1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck,

shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice:

but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.
3 Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father:

but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.
4 The king by judgment establisheth the land:

but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.
5 A man that flattereth his neighbor

spreadeth a net for his feet.
6 In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare:

but the righteous doth sing and rejoice.
7 The righteous considereth the cause of the poor:

but the wicked regardeth not to know it.
8 Scornful men bring a city into a snare:

but wise men turn away wrath.
9 If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man,

whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.
10 The bloodthirsty hate the upright:

but the just seek his soul.
11 A fool uttereth all his mind:

but a wise man keepeth it in till afterward.
12 If a ruler hearken to lies,

all his servants are wicked.
13 The poor and the deceitful man meet together:

the LORD lighteneth both their eyes.
14 The king that faithfully judgeth the poor,

his throne shall be established for ever.
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom:

but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
16 When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth:

but the righteous shall see their fall.
17 Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest;

yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.
18 Where there is no vision, the people perish:

but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
19 A servant will not be corrected by words:

for though he understand he will not answer.
20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words?

There is more hope of a fool than of him.
21 He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child

shall have him become his son at the length.
22 An angry man stirreth up strife,

and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.
23 A man's pride shall bring him low:

but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit.
24 Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul:

he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not.
25 The fear of man bringeth a snare:

but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.
26 Many seek the ruler's favor;

but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD.
27 An unjust man is an abomination to the just:

and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.

I had to look it up.

It's not as well known as the ten commandments; but like them, it would probably not be carved into a building on a new public school. Someone would object on Constitutional grounds.
