(62,444 posts)When a pigeon has been kept and fed in a coop for long enough, then the pigeon can be let go hundreds of miles away, and will return to the coop.
That principle has been used for a very long time to stick things to pigeons and have them deliver those things back to the coop.
When you see events where pigeons or doves are released, what those birds are doing is heading straight back to their home.
This is a stupid stunt, for sure, but not significantly different from the more or less "normal" practice of attaching things to pigeons and having them carry those things home.

(62,444 posts)I wasn't suggesting it was a good idea, but the more or less general concept of "attaching encumbrances to pigeons and releasing them" is not unheard of - and also subject to its share of criticism as well.
What surprises me is the assumption that those responsible are Trump supporters, since it seems more of a parodic commentary about support for Trump. These days, parody can be hard to discern.

(62,444 posts)...since they are kept pigeons, they will return to the coop relatively quickly.
Having pigeons carry objects is a very old practice.
Weird story:
After a bad storm years ago, I had a disoriented pigeon on my deck. We took it in, and it had a tag with a phone number. I called the phone number and the pigeon belonged to a guy who was a pigeon racer several states away. There had been a race recently (these things go over hundreds of miles), and some pigeons got lost in the storm.
I asked, "So how do I get your pigeon back to you."
The instructions were pretty simple - (a) take it outside, (b) let it go, and (c) DON'T FEED IT.
Sure enough, after a while, the pigeon perked up, we took it outside, and away it went.

(6,448 posts)My worry is that owls will just laugh at the pigeons for wearing dunce caps.
Stupid bird brains. Very undignified.

(62,444 posts)What is it that leads you to assume that the persons responsible for a statement to the effect of "Trump supporters are like pigeons" are in fact Trump supporters?
It seems to me that the underlying message here is a comment on the intelligence of Trump supporters, but I'm not sold either way. So, I'm curious to know what it is that makes anyone certain.
