This virus outbreak, if is spreads widely in the US, could be Trump's downfall. He may be able to shoot someone on 5th avenue, but I'm dubious he can survive if the virus spreads to people and their families and have it exposed how much he deconstructed our epidemic response structure.

(25,403 posts)If the coronavirus hits hard, we could have a demand for 3-10 million hospital beds at a time. Who knows? If anything like that happens, health care will be rationed. Hospitals will suspend all other services, just to care for victims of CV. That is not my opinion, it is the gist of what physicians that I know, who are on hospital staffs, are being briefed.
Imagine a pandemic that peaks next Fall. Imagine Trump's totally altruistic ( ) concern that Americans not jeopardize their health by standing in a line to vote in November .
Trump and his minions thrive on entropy. The danger to them and their families notwithstanding, this plays right into their implementation of what Naomi Klein called the "Shock Doctrine." The coronavirus is that tipping point, beyond which we cannot take back our country for a long, long time.
I talked with a radiologist from a major city in the southeastern US last night. He said, "You had better update your Last Will & Testament, because Trump has this one."
At age 23, I was philosophical about dying on a combat mission in Vietnam or over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos. C'est la guerre. At least the VC and NVA were honorable women and men, fighting for a cause in which they had their hearts.
But at 72, it totally pisses me off that I might die because of the gross, intentional incompetence and malfeasance of a vainglorious, draft-dodging, pussy-grabber like that icon of Failure (with a capital F), Donald J. Trump.

(6,407 posts)Bush put an incompetent at the head of FEMA and Katrina was a disaster on his watch. Now Trump has defunded and to some degree abolished our ability to respond to a global pandemic. Hyper partisan moron Ken Cuchinelli is in charge of our response to the virus and knows absolutely nothing about it. I am waiting for "Heck of a job, Cooch".

(11,885 posts)Remember when W Bush had done many similar things, watched things get bad while claiming the economy was still good, and after he drove the deficit sky high also. Trump will incite people with fear, and threats, and like he's done in business do things to hurt others when things don't go his way. The additional threats of this virus after he got rid of people is going to come back and bite him. This will only help get him out of office for his incompetence. Trump is failing badly at everything he touches.

(93 posts)No, a pandemic in the US--MASS panic, riots, ext. would give Trump, for the good of the country, a reason to declare martial law. If it went on long enough, he could suspend elections. While everyone is busy worrying if their town is going to be hit next, his purging of the 'disloyal' and replacing them with magaheads could go full force. Imagine a govt where every section of it is under the control of his cult.

(16,646 posts)This virus while highly contagious, has relatively mild symptoms in most people. 80% of the infected require no medical attention at all. Many will be asymptomatic. But when close family, especially children become ill, people will tend to freak out, and that will not work well for Trump. The Gulf war ultimately ended up being a major problem for Bush II because people had friends and relatives that were affected in many ways. First person experience is the one thing that all of Trump's lies cannot fight.

(16,646 posts)Sorta the point. Elections are generally won or lost by the incumbents actions (or lack thereof). He might be able to shoot someone on 5th avenue, but he might not be able screw this up and get re-elected.
