(11,257 posts)has a single line "Indeed, Trump's position on trade is actually quite similar to the one held by Bernie Sanders, the self-proclaimed democratic socialist, who also opposes TPP and has blamed trade deals for the loss of American jobs."
It is not Trump-like to oppose NAFTA and TPP on the basis that they hurt American workers. That's pretty much a mainstream Democratic voter position. Fair trade above free trade.
The Daily Beast article shows that Sanders is talking about a new alliance that includes middle eastern countries and Russia. Note that it is not NATO. Note that it sounds quite a bit like the United Nations, and also note that if that happened we couldn't waste all of our money getting our military people blown up in the Middle East.
Ok, so thanks for some bare-bones backup to what you are claiming. None of it came from Brunch with Bernie, I'll be waiting for those links. Note also that you've provided no evidence for "tariffs" or "trade wars" yet. Opposing TPP is not the same as that, at all. Your mileage may vary with making alliances to keep the world a safer place. To me it's a good idea.

(108,980 posts)called it NATO 2.0
You're splitting hairs. The other poster was correct.
The senators campaign press secretary, Symone Sanders, confirmed after the speech that the candidate wants Russia and Arab League member nations to be part of the group. She referred to it as NATO 2.0.

(11,257 posts)I wanted some proof of what it was saying, and it provided some, which was fantastic because it allowed me to see what was actually being discussed or alleged without the sneering scare quotes. That's more than u can say for most of the bomb throwers around here.

(37,364 posts)have no use for this man. White nationalists would not have the power they have without the purists like Glaude who wouldn't vote because of purist ideology tests.

(6,448 posts)Even after John Lewis said he didn't remember Bernie being at the civil rights marches (even though Bernie got arrested in Chicago).
I don't watch MSNBC anymore after they gave Swamp Thing all that free coverage, so I don't know Mr. Glaude's stance on anything. I only remember what he looks like and that's about it.
I should have a talk with him. I was all in for Bernie in '16 too, until after the Convention. Then I voted for Hillary. This time will be the same.

(10,155 posts)The fact that I reject white nationalism doesn't mean I am drawn to socialism. And just how is "democratic socialism" different from regular socialism? Have there ever been any socialist states that have actually been democratic?

Successful Socialist Countries
Some argue that there has been no completely socialist country that has been successful, only countries that have seen success in adopting socialist policies.
Bolivia is an example of a successful socialist country. Bolivia has drastically cut extreme poverty and has the highest GDP growth rate in South America.
Other countries that have adopted and enacted socialist ideas and policies, and have seen success in improving their societies by doing so, are Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Great Britain, Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Belgium, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, and New Zealand.

(10,155 posts)socialist countries. Your definition of socialism is mighty flexible. Paved roads and public schools aren't socialism. Universal health care was introduced to Germany by the Prussian militarist Otto Von Bismark who was definitely not a socialist.

(43,422 posts)Nothing I posted said we are.
My definition of socialism is precise and I have, in the past, painstakingly broken down the difference between what we are (a social democracy) and democratic socialism, which Sanders falsely self-labels himself as an adherent of. He is lietrally trying to re-define world-wide accepted definitions (definitions held at both academic levels and in everyday common parlance.)
You seem to have a reading issue and are accidently or wilfully trying to misrepresent what I have said.
We (speaking of Sweden now) have a vibrant capitalist segment, without which our expansive social safety net would not exist. We are most definitely not a socialist nation state.
I have posted dozens (hundreds probably) of times here correcting this error and pointing out the inconsistencies in definitions and labels as espoused by both the Sanders crowd as well as others.
Zero clue what you are on about in regards to me.

(10,155 posts)perfect example of a very successful Social Democracy. Indeed you do us all a great service in pointing out the difference between social democracy and democratic socialism.
OT, my wife and I visited Sweden some years ago. We were very positively impressed with what we saw.

(21,502 posts)but I am promoting historical accuracy.
Yes, Bismarck did include things like health care and pensions in Prussia/German Empire. But he opposed socialisn and adopted those measures to undercut the socialists who were gaining numbers at the time. He considered them a threat to the near absolutist monarchy that he served and from whom he derived his own power.

Funny, how "White Nationalist" is ~50% "Alphabet Cops" in the Venn diagram, but "Democratic Socialist" shows as strongly negative to both "Nationalisim" and "White" influences.

Socialism is the collective ownership of the means of production. Things like factories and such.

Im opposed to socialism. As its true definition. The collective ownership of the means of production.
Multiple options. Its not difficult.

(11,740 posts)The problem is that while White Nationalists are or at least were socially unacceptable at one point they have ALWAYS been aligned with the power base in the United States which has been wealthy White Protestant Christian Men. While they have not wanted to be associated with White Nationalism after the disaster and tragedy of the Holocaust during WWII, there is still a home for it among conservative thought because conservatives believe in hierarchy in which White Men occupy the top and middle tiers of power.
Democratic Socialists on the other hand, represent a threat to hierarchy as socialism in general is about equitable distribution of power and resources. Democratic Socialists scare everyone to the right of them. People who believe in the infallibility of Capitalism and the status quo are terrified of socialists, even the lighter Democratic Socialist. Socialism represents a threat to the status quo and a change in which people who are considered of lower status might be afforded an actual equality that would threaten the White supremacist notion of their elevated status.
