...Republicans close to the White House say officials are lobbying Trump not to go ahead with a Stone rescue. Acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, White House counsel Pat Cipollone and Jared Kushner have argued to Trump that a pardon or commutation would create an unnecessary scandal during an election year. They all think itll be a problem and that there will be hearings, a Republican briefed on the internal conversations told me. Another source briefed on the matter said that Trump is being told, We dont need the hassle. Do it after the election. Sources also said West Wing officials have told Trump that stepping in could lead Attorney General William Barr to resignan outcome one Republican close to the White House described as catastrophic.
Trumps desire to intervene on Stones behalf is being stoked by Stones longtime friend, Fox News host Tucker Carlson. In private, Carlson has lobbied White House officials to convince Trump to keep Stone out of jail. Its the same case hes made on Fox News. Last week, Carlson bashed Judge Amy Berman Jackson, the federal judge presiding over Stones case. She is an open partisan, who has so flagrantly violated the bounds of constitutional law and fairness, its shocking shes still on the bench. If theres anyone in Washington who deserves to be impeached, its Amy Berman Jackson, he said on air. Carlson continued the attack on air Tuesday night, calling Jackson corrupt, dishonest, and authoritarian. Carlson has also tried to discredit the jurys forewoman, who Stones lawyers claimed failed to disclose anti-Trump tweets during jury selection. (Yesterday, Jackson erupted over Carlsons attacks during a courtroom hearing. Any attempts to invade the privacy of the jurors or to harass or intimidate them is completely antithetical to our system of justice, she said.) ...

(82,849 posts)Yeah, right. Remember the scene in the third Indiana Jones movie, when Ilsa is being held by the Nazi bad guy? He'll shoot her if Indiana doesn't hand over his father's Grail diary! Indy says, "Don't shoot!" Henry says, "Don't worry; he won't." Sure enough, after Indy hands over the diary, Ilsa reveals that she's been working the Nazis the whole time: "You should have listened to your father."
The only protection Barr has right now against criminal prosecution is being the Attorney General. He jumps off this tiger, and he gets eaten. Barr won't resign because it will cost him his life. He needs a pardon from Trump before he can even think of stepping down. Trump will pardon Stone before Easter because there's no penalty for it. Decent people will be aghast at the spectacle, but Trump and his supporters will say it's perfectly legal (and it is), and everyone walks away totally innocent, totally impervious to a legal system that's been utterly negated to hold this criminal cabal accountable.
