20-foot waves may be coming to the Great Lakes

Yipes ....

(CNN) Towering waves are forming Thursday on the Great Lakes, with swells that could reach 20 feet, CNN meteorologists said.

Huge waves already have been spotted over southern Lake Michigan, following a mass of cold air that pushed a north wind over the region, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.

Lake Ontario could get waves of up to 20 feet near its center, Guy said. Waves as tall as 10 feet could form on Lakes Huron and Erie, peaking on their southern shores.

“Increased snowfall this season in the region owes in part to low ice coverage on the Great Lakes, as moisture continues to feed precipitation, Guy said. The lakes this week are 9% covered in ice, compared with a typical 42% average coverage, he said. That's the lowest on record since 1973.”

and the lack of ice is already eroding the shoreline in some lakeside communities like Geneva on the Lake. Was up there about a week ago and saw parts of the sidewalk in the township park had fallen right into the lake.

at first felt almost surreal when we approached this vast sea and found it almost level with the road. We're not from up there, obviously, and like a dummy it took me a moment to remember there were no ocean tides and then another to remember the Great Lakes levels were rising with ice melt. A feeling of insecurity at driving along barely above a mercifully calm sea stayed, though.

We saw lots of what until now were wonderful places to live, or at least summer, in; some already ruined, a couple with sandbag walls around, many others still nice but obviously on borrowed time.
