He could care less about the virus or people dying but he does care about the dow because the economy is the only card he has to play in 4 years of complete failure (and even that is a weak card since only businesses, not lower and middle class Americans, are prospering).
So he proclaims coronavirus a "hoax" and that his administration has this all under control. He hopes investors will relax and go back to buying up stocks. But the message he is sending isn't a calming one. The message he is sending by downplaying the virus and kneecapping the CDC's ability to be open with us about it is that there is NO ONE at the helm of the ship during this crisis. Businesses aren't stupid enough to believe this is all a hoax. What they WANT is to know that someone is leading the charge against this thing. To being some level of predictability to a very uncertain situation. And all they are getting is chaos. And the reaction of businesses and investors to chaos is ALWAYS to sell.
So his very attempts to calm markets are only making them WORSE, and at the same time he is doing nothing for the citizens worried about this either. Everything drumpf touches DIES.

(22,166 posts)illnesses (if any)), that we won't be out there buying crap, spending our money, etc. The results of this slowdown will migrate to other sectors before you know it and then you'll see an economic slowdown, which in a way, has been predicted for some time (after the last 10-11 years of going up, what goes up must come down). Trying to fight an avalanche in midstream, it doesn't work.
Dropping interest rates won't help. Throwing money won't help. They tried this back in 2008. Even begged people to go out and buy stuff. Didn't work.

(36,509 posts)Getting reelected is his number one priority. He's in a world of hurt if he doesn't have the office of the presidency to protect him. If things go south, remind everyone that the republican controlled Senate could have gotten rid of the orange menace a few weeks ago but they did not.
on edit: If things go south? Shit, things are already south.
