The article seems to confirm possibility of transmission from asymptomatic person.

Not comforting.
But at least it looks like Germany, unlike the U.S., is responding with with contract tracing, appropriate testing, and action -- and were doing so back in January.

(28,749 posts)1. Certain regions are trying to contact trace but it's already to late.
In NYC this is moving very quickly.

(9,313 posts)4. I fear you are right.
The current use of kits in various jurisdictions seems to be generally limited to testing cases severe enough to require hospitalization. (Cases that would be isolated in hospital pending test results anyway.) With wider availability and processing capacity, that will hopefully change, but I can't help but wonder if the virus has simply been circulating too long undetected to effectively limit spread.
To do any good, I think testing must be opened up to self-referring symptomatic people, with the highest priority being those who live with, work with, or have been in close contact with, a vulnerable population. And of course, anyone who has had contact with an identified case (symptomatic or not)
But, I fear the containment "bus" has probably left the building.
The biggest question is whether "self-quarantine" and other recommended precautions will keep the overall percentage infected down.

(13,431 posts)2. Asymptomatic transmission has been occurring in China since December and likely elsewhere also.
It has probably been transmitting in the US since December as well.
I knew the possibility/probability of asymptomatic transmission was known, but wasn't aware of confirming cases. Thanks for the clarification.
