The move comes as preventative measures are taken throughout the country, including the closure of bars, restaurants and shops.

Spain is poised to go into lockdown over coronavirus after Jet2 planes from the UK turned back in mid-air as the airline cancelled all flights to the country.

Spain's government is to tell all citizens to stay home except to buy food or medicines, go to hospital, go to work or other emergencies, according to a draft decree seen by the Reuters news agency.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said a two-week state of emergency will come into force as the number of dead from COVID-19 - the disease caused by coronavirus - rose to 120.

Meanwhile, low cost airline Jet2, which is based at nine UK airports, has halted all flights with immediate effect to mainland Spain, as well as the Balearic and Canary Islands, including Majorca, Ibiza, Menorca, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife and Fuerteventura.
