My mum had a neighbour, from a few doors down, knocking on her door today

They are in their early 60's, my mum in her late 70's. They just wanted to check in and make sure that as she should self isolate that should she need anything at all she must call them. She will be fine as my twin lives just over a mile away, but they did not know that. They recognised that my mum is a widow in a vulnerable category, as the PM says she needs to stay pretty much in doors for the next 3 months, they would be happy to do her grocery shopping. This is not a couple my mother would generally chat with. They would say hello and have a wee chat if they saw each other, no more than that. Today, when they saw BoJo 'suggesting' the new restrictions for old people to stay their arse at home in this crisis, their first response was to knock on my mums door. Not all hero's wear capes. And my faith in humanity is back, at least for tonight.

I'm 69, my partner is 77, and we're self-isolated. My partner's son in law went out after work and did hundreds of dollars worth of shopping for us. We sterilized everything except the potatoes with isopropyl as we brought it in, and now we're set for a month of stir-crazy lockdown. We might kill each other, but we won't die of starvation.

Bless him a thousand times.

Her sister and BIL are about 10 years younger, and live within 5 minutes drive, so they're right there if she needs assistance at all, but I'm still quite frankly terrified for her. As a breast cancer survivor, she would most likely have a compromised immune system to begin with.

Even though she does need not the support, because of my twin being so close by, the fact they offered is everything.
I hope and believe that other than the MAGAts - people will be kind and proactive in making sure that the most vulnerable will be taken care of in America. We all need to trust in that and act accordingly.

which is nothing compared to South Korea, but still ahead of the USA, especially considering it's about 5 times the population:

In Korea, where the virus spread rapidly last month, health officials rolled out an aggressive testing regime that processed tests for more than 259,000 people and confirmed more than 8,000 infections, according to the Korean CDC. In the U.S. more than 22,000 people have been tested at CDC and public health labs, according to the U.S. CDC. That does not include tests run by commercial labs, some of which were authorized last week to begin automated testing.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/16/who-says-some-nations-arent-running-enough-coronavirus-tests-test-every-suspected-case.html

According to the latest figures, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and public health labs have tested over 25,100 specimens for Coronavirus. But that number doesn't give a full picture of how many people were tested - because many people provide more than one specimen for testing, and many private health laboratories are also conducting tests.

One project by The Atlantic estimates that 41,550 people in the US have been tested. But that's still fewer than many other countries with smaller populations - including South Korea, which has tested 240,000, and the UK, which has tested 44,100.

The new things the UK govt announced yesterday are in there; we haven't shut schools yet, and the report isn't quite as definite about closing them as its other interventions, though it does say it would likely be a net benefit if we want to suppress the virus like China did.

Mom's 80 and Dad's 89. They live in a semi-rural upstate NY town, and 2 of their neighbors had stopped by today to make the same offer to get groceries or go to the pharmacy for them. It's comforting to know that they have so many nice people near them. I only live about 40 miles away, but my work doesn't allow me to completely isolate myself from contact with other people. So I was letting them know that it was probably best not to see me face to face for a while. Dad's got asthma and Mom has several health problems. I couldn't live with myself if I unknowingly brought the virus into their house.

I share your gratitude for the kind souls among us.

I think between this crisis AND the ineptitude of our "president", we'll be seeing just how wonderful Americans can be in helping each other.
