What's the situation with the 3M N95 masks?

I've been using them for years when I mow grass, and I read where one talking head said that particular mask would actually help with the virus. Now it seams they are impossible to find. Didn't Trump meet with 3M to increase production, or was that just typical Trump bullshit?

BTW, saw two ladies in the grocery store yesterday wearing them. Had the identical 3M orange print on the front as mine. Maybe I should have asked where they got them, but I have a couple left over from last year so okay for the short term.

An N95 mask is essentially a fitted face-filter that excludes particles of a certain size Maru Kitteh Mar 2020 #5
Update question: These masks have an expiration date. Elwood P Dowd Mar 2020 #6
Just my guess, but maybe it's because the elastic strap may grow brittle. Mister Ed Mar 2020 #7

Not effective if you sprayed insecticides.

But yeah, you can't find them anywhere affordably. They have either been requisitioned by high priority customers or bought up by hoarders and scalpers.

Pence visited the factory, but the gov didn't order any emergency production and didn't provide any money for increased production.

Good luck. Even emergency rooms can't get them now.

A doctor told me they were a good all purpose mask, so I started using them mowing. Yea, possibly overkill.

It does not matter if it is being used for medical or industrial purposes, the maske doesn't know where it is, it just does what it does.

The two I have from last year have been taken out of their packaging, so I have no idea what that date is. Several people have been buying these things without even knowing about that. Even some hospitals have purchased large numbers of them that were out of date. So just how effective will some of these masks be? I know some prescription drugs will still work after the expiration date, but I know little to nothing about these things.

There was passing mention on my local news tonight of the frustration of doctors who were trying to use expired N95's, but found that the elastic straps snapped when they tried to put the mask on.

I'd guess that the masks probably don't lose their filtration properties after the expiration date, but that the straps lose their elasticity
