And had to decide what the next steps were to be in order to deal with this particular pandemic what Solutions would you propose?
Not sure myself but it seems to me that one of the priorities should be establishing a reliable supply chain to ensure that the essential consumer needs are met...if we're going to ask people to shelter in place they need an assurance that they will have basic needs met.
Perhaps a return to ration cards to ensure that basic food and other "essential" resources are available...and that those minimums will be delivered?

(2,955 posts)That's literally one of the first things I would do. There's no reason for all this hoarding, and it just causes a chain reaction of panic.

(3,622 posts)Basic necessities should be rationed based upon certain factors.
What are the basic needs?
Milk, sugar, bread, butter, protein such as meats, vegetables etc.?
I live without City provided water so I need diesel fuel to run my well. How much diesel fuel should I be awarded under a rationing plan.
I dont drink a lot of milk but my elderly mother likes a bowl of cereal from time to time...I'd guess a gallon every two weeks would be adequate.
It's a complicated issue...

(10,903 posts)After that, we need to make sure everyone gets proper care. Ventilators, hospital beds, etc.
Then get well people locked down for a few weeks and make sure they get food and supplies without standing in crowded lines.
Relief for businesses affected, and lots, lots more... this is a very complex situation.

(15,805 posts)Not everything needs to be rationed, so it should only apply to items that are in short supply. Govt programs to provide nutritious foods like dairy, fresh produce, proteins, for children might be deeply discounted similar to the WIC program. Maybe something similar could be offered to seniors.
The government should be providing food assistance to everyone who needs it. Healthcare coverage should also be available to everyone without any out of pocket costs that would keep sick people from seeking medical care and spreading disease.
Govt should give every one who qualifies a monthly stipend that would help support their local communities. Make utilities covered by govt programs and ban disconnection during this crisis. Debt deferment, student loan forgiveness, are needed.
Make public transportation free or very low cost. Expand public education to include free tuition at all State schools, and use online learning as much as possible.
In addition to an expanded family leave act, there should also be childcare assistance, and elder care too. Expand unemployed employment pay to include retraining. Minimum wage should be called a living wage and be adjusted to each location to pay more for those working in NYC vs less for someone in Sleepy Hollow, Arkansas.
Our govt can spend trillions on war toys and shower big corporations and the wealthy with free money and generous tax gifts, so it's time that the govt started shoring up the lives of working class folks.

Dad passed away last year but mum still remembers.

(15,805 posts)It was a hardship for everyone. They did it because they understood their inconvenience meant that American soldiers and our allied troops could eat, and the families of our British allies wouldn't go hungry whilst under attack by the Germans.
Housewives shared and traded food and ration coupons. They shared cooking equipment, grandma loaned out her gigantic pressure canner in exchange for a few of the canned goods.
I saved her wartime recipe collection and there are some really strange concoctions. Those women were very creative in using what little they had. Almost everyone had a Victory Garden and kept a few chickens, and grandma had a couple of milk goats that contributed to the meager larder of those times.

(7,525 posts)1) Ask states to restrict the congregation of more than 10 people in any county that has had a new infection in the last 14 days, with few exceptions (such as grocery stores)
2) Offer to reimburse states that offer 100% wage replacement in their unemployment insurance program with no maximum until the end of the year.
3) Offer to reimburse companies 100% of any sick leave wages paid out through the end of the year.
4) Use the 1950 Defense Production Act to procure ventilators, respirators, and other vital equipment
5) Require hospitals to establish emergency training procedures for non-pulmonary specialist to provide respiratory care. IE, pediatricians, OB-GYNs, oncologists, and so on should be given basic pulmonology training

We return to San Diego tomorrow, all however many passengers there are will spread out across the country, and some of us will inevitably become infected. Alas.
