The eight-term Illinois Democrat fell to businesswoman Marie Newman, who led 48 to 44 percent when The Associated Press called the race, a resounding victory for the partys progressive wing, which has struggled so far this year to capitalize on its 2018 success.

I never researched Lipinski's background, but the name and location hint at a conservative Polish Catholic background. Even if that is in error, a strong opponent of abortion rights--especially at a time when those rights are endangered-- is something our caucus in the House can well do without. Do widzenia.

It seems like he was only running as a Democrat because his district had elected a Democrat for so long. Lipinski should have made the move to the other side of the aisle long ago. Instead, he just voted that way.

Chicago is a bit weird.

(12,157 posts)"The district leans heavily Democratic but Lipinski was likely able to hang onto it in part because of his ties to the Chicago political machine."
So you're saying it leans heavily Democratic, but the ConservaDem variety. So she'll need to convince voters that she can represent their interests better than her Republican opponent can.

(23,554 posts)very right wing "democrat".
The extreme example was back in the '80s when Harold Washington ran for mayor. The democratic primary he was against 2 more conservative candidates. He was black. There was a lot of racism going on. He won the primary with the support of blacks latinos LGBT and liberals. Most white voters hated him. They hated him so much the republican candidate Bernie Epton who no one ever heart of rose in the polls and it was way closer than it should have been. Epton did lose. But, in the past pretty much no one voted republican for mayor of Chicago.
