Could Trump delay November election? Not without inviting 'President Pelosi'

WASHINGTON — Voters are unnerved. Confusion is growing throughout the country as the coronavirus outbreak moves states to postpone primaries and change voting procedures in the midst of a presidential election year. It is all leading to a lot of speculation — sometimes uninformed — about what could happen in November if this virus is still spreading.

Are there any guarantees the election will actually happen if congregating in public places, like polling stations, is still a risk come fall? Can voters be confident President Donald Trump can’t exploit this crisis to avoid facing them if he fears defeat?

The short answer is yes. While government officials have the authority to reschedule voting for the parties’ primaries, that flexibility does not exist for the general election. It is all but certain to happen as planned. The question is whether states reeling from the pandemic will be prepared to accommodate everyone who wants to cast ballots.

I suggest he cancel the election in just the red states so his supporters can avoid exposure to COVID.

Then I would welcome the Electoral College results if the required amount was 135 instead of 270.

about Trump canceling the election. He can't do it. Period. If he manages to pull some shenanigans that prevent the GE from being held as scheduled or close to it, Nancy Pelosi automatically becomes the president on January 20.

drumpf does not follow the rules and neither does the Russian Repug SCOTUS. They have already broken pieces of our constitution severa; times just to help him. They are part and parcel of his administration's' long term effort to establish a rw fascist government and serve to destroy the constitution. I don't care about Roberts' lying OP's, it's just a distraction and pretense to lull us while he helps destroy us. Look at his actions as they are quite clear and very rw slanted. Yes, a sane president who cared about the country couldn't stop elections, but one put in place by PUtin to destroy us and who has 2 other branches of government behind him absolutely would do this.

would tell Trump to fuck off if he tried to cancel elections as would most red states. If a few red states do want to listen to Trump and cancel, let them. It’s Biden in a landslide.

Chuck Grassley would.

Why? Constitution.

Per the Constitution, the president's term ends January 20, 2021. But also per the constitution, the terms of the members of the House of Representatives end on January 3, 2021. If there is no presidential election, there also will be no election of House members. And, once again per the Constitution, House vacancies can only be filled by an election, not by an appointment.

So, if there are no elections, there would be no members of the House after January 3 and no Speaker. Next in line for succession would be the President Pro Tem of the Senate. That would be Chuck Grassley, who isn't up for reelection in 2020 and thus wouldn't be impacted by there not being an election. (BTW, I've seen several "experts" cited for the idea that Pelosi would become President. I wish those "experts" had bothered to actually consult the Constitution).

Of course, this just drives home the point that fears of their being no election are absurd.

As I stated in another thread:Some people seem to be more invested in freaking out over unlikely scenarios than over the crisis right in front of their noses.

Congress has set a uniform date for federal elections - currently the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November (which the president can't change), but the election of members of Congress is separate from that of the president and controlled by a different section of the Constitution and the Electoral College is not involved. The Constitution says: "The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of choosing Senators." Calling off the presidential election (if it even could be done) doesn't automatically call off Congressional elections.

regardless of the outcome of the recount.

The supreme court stopped the recount and gave it to bush, so it never came to that point. But would they have? Would today's republican led state legislatures award their state's votes to trump on the pretext of an unfair election? Would anything stop them if they tried?

After the way the GOP has capitulated to trump in everything so far, I'm no longer confident they wouldn't try.

The POTUS cannot cancel the election.
Rep Pelosi CANNOT become POTUS even if he could.

On Jan 20,2021 The POTUS and VPOTUS along with the entire House are out of a job. PERIOD.

What we see most years is the newly elected HoR members sworn in for the first time along with the re-elected Reps.

If we don't have a clear winner after the official electoral vote, sometime in Dec, the HoR votes by state delegation. One vote per state for one of the three top EV candidates.

The Ds have more seats, but the Rs have more states.
Spkr Pelosi is not running, therefore she will not be in the top three candidates.

The ONLY viable way for this to happen if for Sen Sanders to run as a Progressive Party candidate and Nicki Haley to run as the Patriot Party candidate and each siphon off a few electoral votes from each side.

I serious suspect that people continually posting this stuff are trolls looking to get people cranked up.

This country has made it thru worse situations.

voter suppression. I'm afraid that they will use this as an excuse to suppress the vote even more, especially in areas that tend to vote Democratic. And if they say they are doing it in the interest of public health they may get away with it.
