If our planet could breath it would be taking its first clean breath

Last edited Thu Mar 19, 2020, 02:37 PM - Edit history (1)

in many decades. Maybe some insect or animal won’t go extinct because we’re not polluting the air suddenly.

Maybe businesses will realize their employees work just as well from home and they’ll save themselves money on renting floorspace by eliminating the workplaces.

Maybe this Spring, which starts tomorrow we’ll see what clear skies used to look like in the far past.

All because the greatest part of the world suddenly stopped using their cars all at once.

The silver lining is pretty obvious with this pandemic. I hope it will change our lives and lifestyles and work habits and our need to drive just as quickly.

BoJo etc.

Most especially Trump. It is the US's abdication as world leader since January 20, 2017 that has set us on this collision course.

Otherwise, it will happen again.

We went to Venice many years ago, and I understand you can now see the bottom of canals. That is amazing to me, and says in graphic detail what you've just said.

Wholeheartedly agree.

I've kept wondering if the COVID-19 is somehow related to climate change. Of course all things in nature are inter-related, but I was wondering on more of a direct level. Nonetheless, perhaps this is Mother Earth's way of showing just how weak and insignificant we are in the scheme of things and that in the end, she always wins.

We haven't learned how to co-exist with nature, so humans have become a pathogen that needs to be reduced in the ecosystem for the Earth to save itself.

It totally makes sense on a macro scale that viruses serve a purpose like white blood cells in the human body attempting to take out living organisms that, like bacteria, are a drain on the health of a larger system - tearing out healthy pieces of it, increasing the temperature...

I wish the best for everyone and I'm totally not a nihilist, but I can see the logic in that. The Earth is sick, and hopefully, this is the wake-up call we need.

I’ve been thinking about the changes this time might bring

Maybe we learn that we don’t need so many things

Maybe we learn it’s important to make the things we need close by

Maybe we learn to take care of each other and our earth

Maybe we cook and garden more, and get out to experience nature

I hope we take to heart how important it is to have health care and a functioning government

Hell, there were lots of papers along these lines in connection with the air pollution restrictions during the Olympics held in China.

Recessions always give an atmospheric signature.

Mauna Loa's CO2 observatory is operating normally. Yesterday we were over 414 ppm.

we would look into more online working. There are a lot of jobs that can be done online, or at least partially. This would have ecological benefit, and would also help with things like child care. I'm lucky that as an academic I've always been able to do at least some of my work at home, which meant not having to sign my kid up for fulltime child care.

I also hope that this will be a lesson in the importance of government and competent leadership.

...And as a church person, I hope this will bring an end to the weekly "passing of the peace" (aka weekly exchange of the germs), which I've always hated!
