On Tuesday, the White House announced some details on how taxpayers will be able to defer any tax payments they might have.
If you owe a payment to the IRS, you can defer up to $1 million as an individual, said Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, adding that the payments would be interest free and penalty free for 90 days.
All you have to do is file your taxes; youll automatically not get charged interest in penalties, Mnuchin said during a coronavirus briefing with President Trump looking on.
But another tax-day ritual isnt changing: You still have to file by April 15.

You too can be like Donald Trump and not pay your taxes.

(52,317 posts)Any payment normally due April 15 would be due 90 days later, even if you're not filing for 4 months.
I haven't seen any fine print, but when they say "90 days," they probably mean July 15, even though that's actually 91 days after April 15....
I'll wait for the fine print to be confirmed, but as of now, my thinking is to both file and pay on July 15, after filing for the automatic extension on April 15.
I'm also assuming Connecticut follows the irs on this.
