Which was that chloroquine (or derivative) may well be a promising treatment for coronavirus.
I do not understand the negativity here over it. And it preceded Trump's mentioning it.
I've read numerous research papers over the past few days that mention the drug and it's potential. It gives me hope.

(102,357 posts)will have to go through trials and an approval process before it can be used for COVID-19.
All we have is some case series data. Not to mention it is not clear there is a large supply available.

(102,357 posts)the first question from the audience hearing the findings is "did you see a protective effect among those drinking alcohol?!" Every damned time (and no, there never is, whether Hepatitis A or Vibrio infections) LOL

(115,836 posts)QED.
It might make me feel better, though. It's tempting to stay drunk for the next 18 months.

(102,357 posts)Yes, physicians might try to use it off-label, but they would be walking on thin ice without more than a few case series data. If there were even one study completed somewhere, FDA could grant a "compassionate use" approval. There is not.

2) already approved as a human drug
3) old drug, no patents
4) manufacturing apparatus in place
In times of pandemic, those factors are invaluable, IMHO.

(7,336 posts)It apparently works by altering the pH of an area in the cell where the virus needs to carry out an enzymatic process in order to replicate.
Enzymes are notorious for being pH specific, meaning if the balance is off just a little, they can't work.
So, by simply knocking the pH off a little, chloroquine may effectively prevent--or limit--virus replication.
It makes sense.
