Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsGovernor DeWine---apparently a swell guy as far as some here are concerned---was just
on CNN and (this will be paraphrased) when asked if he was OK with Trump's answers about the shortages of masks and gloves and swabs, stated that one of his people had spoken with the White House by phone and he was assured that the president would "do all that is necessary".
Sadly, the Blitzer did not follow up with "And just HOW FUCKING LONG has the sonofabitch been assuring us that he WAS GOING TO "do all that is necessary"?
Carry on, Ohioans.

(42,288 posts)he is trying to do right by the state and takes the crisis seriously. That said, he is also a lick-spittle when it comes to the tRump party.
Sort of a stand-up worm....

(11,502 posts)Im glad he was taking the precautions for Ohioans.... but if he had to vote against trump or his party that would never happen! Hes still a true Republican!

(32,062 posts)He's a Republican! and they never disparage their dear Leader.
Just because he's shown leadership in his state over this one issue doesn't mean we're all falling in love with him!
But right now he's doing what he thinks is best for Ohio.

(7,512 posts)Even the R Governors that are doing proactive things won't criticize Trump. "It's not a time for fingerpointing".

(34,087 posts)All tests results are reported, and the formal estimates for how many cases there are in Ohio are certainly not an underestimate (100,000 cases - at the time there were 3 documented cases).
As for communication, if that's what you are getting at, he holds a press conference that lasts between 1 & 2 hours every day, including Saturday and Sunday, and answers all questions. I have watched most of them, and haven't seen him dodge any he would be legally permitted to answer. (Justice O'Connor, on the other hand, was her usual abrupt, arrogant, and evasive self)
Frankly, as long as he's taking the steps necessary - and following the lead of the director of public health - I don't care what he says or doesn't say about Trump. I'm more concerned with saving lives than scoring political points.

(34,087 posts)Because tests are not available, based on two community transmission cases, Dr. Acton publically, in a press conference at which DeWine was present, estimated that there were 100,000 cases in Ohio. That's a higher ratio of confirmed cases to estimated cases than I've seen. I wasn't able to find it earlier, but I'm pretty sure it was a Harvard epidemiologist who suggested 50 cases for every confirmed case.
Not sure what else you want him to do - no one can manufacture tests out of thin air, and you can't report what you can't confirm.
Atticus
(15,124 posts)his most obvious failures, he is not "taking the steps necessary" to save lives. This is not just "being a Republican". It is being---no offense intended--- a "toady".
Ms. Toad
(34,087 posts)But he IS taking the steps necessary to save lives in this crisis.
Absolutely nothing I have said suggest that I think, as a general principle, he is a swell guy. I have been very clear - in virtually every comment I have made that in general I disagree with pretty much every position he holds (I'm not aware of any I agree with, but I don't know every single position).
Praising the commendable actions he is taking has zero to do with thinking he is a swell guy.

(34,087 posts)Every statement I have made, or seen on DU, makes it clear that no one here thinks he is a swell guy, as a general matter.
That said, most of us in Ohio are impressed with his actions in response to this crisis.
Two very different things.

He has been acting like someone concerned about the health of all of his constituents.
Sometimes a crisis brings out the best in people."
Ms. Toad
(34,087 posts)It says "in this crisis" he has not been "acting like a Republican."
Reading comprehension is an important skill. Nothing I said suggests I think DeWine is a swell guy. It says exactly what I said it did - his actions in this crisis are commendable.
Atticus
(15,124 posts)not intended to set out anyone's exact words, including yours---but, you knew that.
What you call "reading comprehension" seems more like retroactive parsing to me.
I will back away from this, I regret that we are at odds about this when I am certain there is much more upon which we agree. I hope you can enjoy the rest of your evening.
Ms. Toad
(34,087 posts)Any fair read of what I posted (in several threads) is a limited praise for the actions DeWine has taken to limit the transmission of COVID 19 in Ohio. Further, at least once in each thread I have expressly distanced myself from his political positions, in general. You are free to go back and check the dates on my other posts and check the edit history on each of them. Nothing about what I am saying is either retroactive or parsing.
I honestly don't know if we have more upon which we agree - my core values include recognizing and praising even those people with whom I disagree when they set aside politics and act in the best interests of their constitutents; those values also include being painstakingly careful not to mischaracterize what others say.
Atticus
(15,124 posts)Ms. Toad
(34,087 posts)that wasn't tied it to a suggestion I was retroactively parsing my prior comments.

(14,494 posts)I seriously think tRump has instituted a 12th commandment: "Thou shalt bow down and pray to me each evening, precisely facing wherever I'm located and recite "Hail Trump" one-hundred times".
At least that's the way they behave.

(23,218 posts)In regard to my kid's safety and lack of protective clothing, masks, etc.
I've written him a plethora of times and called, nothing back.
I did hear back via phone from Sherrod Brown's office.
Nothing from Rob Portman and I've emailed and called many times.
Marcy Kaptur's office had a live town hall type meeting on the phone with a Q&A with me and many other constituents. Her office also called and spoke with me personally.
Nothing from DeWine or Portman and I've since tried calling and writing again and I'm one pissed off mother at this point.

(11,949 posts)But this is a fact based site. And the fact is on this one issue, that asshole is doing a better job than most governors.
He obviously believed his science experts and too dramatic action.
Do I like the fact it may help him become more electable? Hell no. But better than him pulling a trump and allowing the deaths of more Ohioans who are going to die anyway.

Did they do a worse job than DeWine?

(11,949 posts)But the only place I have read on here giving him credit is his handling of the pandemic.
Nothing else. Do you disagree? Has he handled the pandemic poorly? Compared to many other governors.
And any other subject you want to throw outs about him, dont bother. I agree. There is not one other thing I am aware he has done that does not demand condemnation.
Atticus
(15,124 posts)issue (cancelling the primary) DeWine had done "better than most" governors and that he had "believed his scientists". Hence, the questions in my prior post which remain unanswered.
I have not commented on DeWine's "handling of the pandemic" beyond my opinion that he should not have cancelled th primary because of it. In doing that, he evaded a clear court order and set a terrible precedent. Having his health official do what a court had just said he could not followed the Trump format of simply ignoring courts that disagree with you.
