The freedom dividend's resurgence may be over before it even began.
During a Senate GOP lunch on Thursday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-N.C.) told his colleagues he was trying to talk President Trump out of supporting individual coronavirus relief checks for Americans, Politico reports. White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows was also trying to get Trump on Graham's side, per Politico.
Mandatory quarantines in the face of the COVID-19 outbreak have already left many Americans without jobs, at least until the businesses they work for reopen. And the economic effects of the new coronavirus' spread may leave some people more permanently unemployed. That's led to bipartisan lawmakers proposing issuing individual checks to all Americans; some proposals have limited them by income bracket, but others are universal. Even Trump has said he'd support individual payments, but Graham has publicly come out against issuing them to every American indiscriminately.
Still, just after the meeting, Graham tweeted a clip of his Thursday appearance on Fox News, during which he said the phase three package would provide people "income to get through this." He'd support supplementing traditional unemployment payments by providing "75 percent of people's income up to $80,000."

(25,183 posts)I moved here a couple years ago, and I cannot wait for my shot at voting against him for the first time in my life.
But, I consider the checks to be Trump's attempt to buy off the mushy middle, and in this case, Graham is probably right. The money should go towards people who lost jobs because of the virus, who are really hurting.

(45,806 posts)you work with. MAYBE this will be enough to go them to vote against him. Most people don't like a Senator who would deprive them of the ability to survive an emergency!

A HERETIC I AM
(24,377 posts)Seriously. The idea of making it part of the unemployment compensation scheme makes much more sense, but just sending everyone a thousand dollars in the mail? Really? Where's it supposed to come from? Is the Bureau of Printing and Engraving just supposed to go full on, 24/7 shoving $100 bills out the door, damned be the consequences?
I know people are and will continue to suffer from this episode, and I fully support helping those in the most need, but people have to recognize this for what it is;
A bullshit attempt by this administration to paper over how badly they have fucked up the response to this pandemic, full stop.
It's no different than paying farmers hurt by Trumpy's idiocy with the tariffs, It is ridiculous and people should just say so.
If I get a $1000 check from the government (and I kind of doubt I ever will, but whatever) I am going to put it toward long term debt I have (My car loan, for example) , NOT buy groceries with it, so it will not be stimulative as far as I am concerned.
its a stupid idea and we should say so.

(25,183 posts)on the credit card. The Treasury will just borrow the money.
That's why I support the idea of getting the money to the people most in need, not every Tom, Dick and Harry out there with a Social Security number.
We are in agreement as to this scheme by Trump to buy votes this fall.

(11,771 posts)having insider info off this crisis to continue to now make millions off investing in 'cures', 'testing', etc... And people like me who've lost half their income because assisted care facilities are in lockdown get shit continued rubbed into our faces waiting for the perfect solution. Continue to contribute to campaigns instead of foodbanks. The politicians are going to be fucking fine! They're getting tested on demand, they have shitloads of money, the best healthcare, yet, people are worried someone might spend a tax payer dollar on something THEY don't approve of. I am so fucking done.
