General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAs a citizen, I would like to formally request that all Senators involved with insider trading...
...withdraw from continuing their political careers in the next election.
The insider trading is an affront to every American.
It is corruption that is beyond the pale and cannot be accepted by any law-abiding American citizen.
These Senators should immediately resign from the US Senate and permit someone with a little more integrity to represent the people of this country.

There is absolutely no excuse for Senators to deal in insider trading, and their less than wealthy citiziens should be made aware of it.

(3,257 posts)Generally, most insider trading cases are settled with a slap on the wrist and a fine. I remember a case years ago where the owner of brokerage firm settled for a $70,000.00 fine and a lifetime ban. he was 67 at the time and his shop was already closed so it was a big joke among the local OTC brokers.

(8,419 posts)We deserve so much better.
She has always been a moderate at best, funded by Corp $, we should have two solid Dem Senators to offset the Alabama's and Wyoming's. Instead we have one liberal and one moderate.
And as a moderate, she ALWAYS takes the repuke line when not pushed. She is our Susan Collins.

(7,772 posts)Fair enough. I do not think she is a bad person, along the lines of most of the GOP. I do think she is a bit to close to Susan Collins in the Venn diagram.
Again, just my opinion.
Also, I was a bit strident in my criticism yesterday. Her stock trades do not fit the pattern of the GOP Senators.

(6,926 posts)the sales transactions of her and Ron Johnson (R-WI) were actually due to insider trading, or were coincidental.
I want to know. I want them investigated. I want to know for sure.
And if it turns out they were not insider trades, I will happily apologize to Ron Johnson too ... creep though he is.

(4,787 posts)...which is what politicians are advised to do to avoid situations like this. Her investment managers made a decision to sell the stock in question without informing her of their actions before the fact. (A transaction that ultimately cost her money, because its value subsequently went up.) She also didn't attend the private meeting in question.
Why the heck should she resign? She's supposed to accept an accusation of acting unethically when she had not?
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)the sale of the stock might not have been as nefarious as some of the GOPers. I'll leave it up to the SEC investigators and voters whether it's questionable at best.

Hell, I'm mid-level management in my career. If I trade my company's stock within 30 days of our earnings release offer within 3 days after, mmt ass is grass. And of I become aware puff material insider info, I'm put on . Mop trading or stock else I'm liable for federal charges. It's pretty serious shit. It should be no different for politicians!

(4,986 posts)Theres a difference between managing ones stocks and insider trading. Like I said in another post, not all of these transactions are the same.
For instance, buying into stocks in February that were destined to lose in March is not the same as a senator dumping millions of dollars in stock while downplaying the virus or talking up tRumps abilities to effectively manage the response.

Lock them the fuck up. Resignation, fuck no. They need to be held accountable for their actions. Insider trading warrants a long, very difficult, prison sentence - particularly in light of thousands dying from their lies.

(216 posts)I do not mean or intend to diminish in any way the lack of integrity and betrayal of trust and law of these senators. However, their actions dont match the requirements or intent of the insider trading laws.
Those violations require information from within the company, not known by or available to the general public. The information is stolen or improperly passed on to another individual who then uses that information to profit by making appropriate stock trading moves.
The original insider trading laws actually exempted Congress. To fix this problem a new law was passed known, by its short title, as the STOCK Act. It was passed, IIRC, in 2012. It specifically covered members of the federal government. All members of all 3 branches are subject to the STOCK Act. It prohibits profiting from any privileged, secret or confidential information learned in the course of their duties.
So, lets throw the STOCK Act at them. Actually putting them in stocks on the Capitol Mall for a day before being locked up in prison would not only seem appropriate but also provide a teachable moment.
