Think it's a coincidence that blue states and urban populations are being hardest hit while Trump drags his feet? Oh, his base will be hit too, but you think Hitler lost any sleep over the potential suffering of the German people when he invaded Poland?

(11,924 posts)But its due to population density and many more travelers. Our 3 first cases were people (academics) traveling out of state to a party where they interacted with an infected person. I would venture to say people in rural areas dont travel that much or come into contact as much with as many international travelers as highly populated, academic and banking areas.

(54,436 posts)He never imagined that he, himself, would be the root of the whole German nation suffering. People other than Germans suffering, of course, never struck him as something to worry about in the first place. My father-in-law, who was drafted off his farm at age 17, sent to Stalingrad at 18, and returned minus a leg at age 19, was usually a very even-tempered guy. But whenever an image of Hitler appeared on the TV during some documentary, he would grow silent and distant, his jaw rippling in suppressed anger.
Another narcissist with a repressed inferiority complex, Trump may be aware of the fact that other people are suffering, but he doesn't quite get how that has anything to do with him.

The reason blue states are showing higher numbers is because testing has been more widely available. States dont get much redder than Louisiana and Georgia. Each is reporting more deaths than a number of states with a greater number of confirmed cases. If and when extensive testing finally rolls out you will see a major uptick in the number of cases without regard to whether they are blue or red.

My point is that we don't really know that blue states are being hit that much harder than red states.
And while there is no question that he has mishandled this criminally, how exactly has he exploited it in favor of red states?

Expect Trump to swing into dynamic action when it does, making himself a hero to his base.

(1,206 posts)they have on average higher numbers of older people and very, very few hospitals and even fewer people trained in how to care for people in the middle of a cureless pandemic.
Right now they are (while obviously not immune), slightly protected from the spread we're seeing in New York, Seattle and other (urban/blue/whatever you want to call them) areas because there are far fewer people and social distancing is kind of the norm.
When this thing really hits, it's going to hit much harder in Trump country and there will be absolutely nothing he can do for his base at that point - if New York hospitals can't get respirators then you better believe that Bevis County Hospital can't get paperclips.
