HEALTH UPDATE: Today we got confirmation that my wife tested positive for #COVID19, but thankfully, our three children did not. While the worst seems to be behind both of us, this is a nasty virus that we havent shaken yet. Many have asked what our symptoms are, so here they r:

Ive had a fever (101-102) off and on for 9 days, headache, bad cough, fatigue, and aches. My wifes fever spiked to 103 but has gone down. She still has a headache, stuffy head and some congestion (which is not typical). And we are the lucky ones who have not been hospitalized.

FWIW, Dan is only 44.

(102,357 posts)The immune response is going to be fascinating, especially now that we are seeing evidence of younger people comprising a larger percent than expected of the hospitalized nationwide. Somehow, I doubt all are going to be explained by the known set of "preexisting" concomitant health conditions.
I wish I could magically see ahead a year or two and see what we know that we needed to know now.
I'm really curious to see if there might be any cross-over immunity from those who had recently experienced colds (many colds are adenoviruses, rhinoviruses, parainfluenza viruses, etc and thus would not, but some are coronaviruses).
(Clinical curiosity is what keeps me from overloading on the more depressing aspects).

(102,357 posts)used in Telluride to assess the community infection rate. They will obtain paired blood samples a couple weeks apart to see the immune response. This is how we have long diagnosed viral diseases, since a 4-fold increase in antibodies is usally observed with actual infection.
With most viruses, we see an increase in IgM antibody early in the infection and IgG for variable amounts of time (often fairly prolonged) thereafter. This can go a very long way to identifying the patterns and risks in communities. Relying only on antigen tests (the RT-PCR that detects viral nucleic acid) can not differentiate between active infection and thus we have a focus on clinical symptoms. Combining the two will advance our abilities tremendously.

(15,290 posts)Thanks for sharing. The covid-19 symptoms don't seem to be uniquely identifiable and are so similar to flu, it just makes me wonder how many people have had it and recovered thinking they just had the flu.

(6,797 posts)Just announced on local news only first responders and fire fighters will be tested. Very few tests. Get well wishes to whoever catches this damn virus.

(6,929 posts)is a very big deal. Children can tolerate that much better, but it dehydrates an adult much faster.
Do not ignore a fever.

(3,538 posts)Its hay fever season; I dont want to be freaking out every time I sneeze. So I take my temperature every day. Its probably not 100% guaranteed to indicate infection, but it is one indicator. So far so good.
