Pierce: With Two Words, Andrew Cuomo Established Himself as the Leader This Country Needs Now

With Two Words, Andrew Cuomo Established Himself as the Leader This Country Needs Now
The New York governor's Friday morning press conference was a master class in leveling with the public.

BY CHARLES P. PIERCE
MAR 20, 2020

“Blame me.”

With two remarkable words, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo established himself as the leader the country needs during these plague days. On Friday, Cuomo essentially shut down the economy of his state, and of its largest city, which happens to be the largest city in this country. He did so in order to fight the public-health catastrophe that is engulfing his state and the country.

These were not words we ever will hear from the country’s president*, or, likely, anyone who works for him. Cuomo’s press conference announcing this new policy was a master class in leveling with the public, and it put Cuomo at the head of a group of governors—including Gavin Newsom of California,Andy Beshear of Kentucky, and Jay Inslee of Washington—who have grasped the enormity of what’s happening to their people. At the same time, Cuomo is clearly pleading for the federal government for help, begging the administration* to do its damn job so he can do his.

For years, Cuomo has looked like everything that was wrong with the Democratic party. He leaned toward the money power and he arranged the New York legislature in a way that empowered Republicans against the more progressive elements of his own party. It made any plans he had for running for president dead on arrival every four years. But over the past months, and especially in his press conferences, Cuomo has demonstrated a knack for the kind of leadership that rallies people rather than frightens them, and that has not relied upon the fouler elements of American politics to get the job done. He has become someone upon whom everyone can rely.

These are strange times, indeed.

calm (but urgent)sense of competence and preparedness (to the extent possible), doing the hard things earlier than most, demonstrating an extraordinary command of crucial details, facts, logistics... all without being at all dramatic. I can't believe I used to regard him as a lightweight... He has such energy and vitality, even though it appears he is working around-the-clock during this crisis.

Both Governors Newsom and Inslee have been competent in this crisis.

Governor Cuomo, though a late arrival to this crisis, is also putting on a masterclass in competent crisis leadership.

Meanwhile, our unindicted co-conspirator of a president thinks this whole thing is a reality tv show he can manage.

Those poor people are still in that cruise ship docked outside of Oakland. I think our "very stable genius" forgot about them.

While the effects of COVID-19 may have first manifested big time on the West Coast, aside from NYC, we in NY have a hot zone just north of the city. (New Rochelle, NY; Westchester County)

As it is, I can only watch Trump's press conferences if I want shits and giggles. And not in live time, either.

For real news on this crisis, I turn in to my Governor Cuomo, my county executive Latimer and my city's mayor Bramson (I get a daily e-mail from the Mayor)

Cuomo has been on this since the beginning (thank you very much) and he's coordinating with the governors of CT, NJ, PA and DE in addressing this crisis.

It pays to live in a blue city, county and state at this time.

Mon Mar 23, 2020, 08:59 PM

the crisis first erupted in public view in Washington state. Next we had the whistleblower and political hackery (that kills these days) in retrieving people from China, including a whistleblower complaint about no protections taken with infected people this administration quarantined on the federal base near La Mirada, California.

Next, while the virus was still ravaging elder living facilities, we discovered an outbreak in Northern California which rapidly encompassed the Bay Area. All the while, lives were lost and families were suffering.

Next, the virus was found in La Rochelle.

I meant late arrival vis à vis the other two governors. I did not mean late arrival as in incompetent.

No doubt, all three governors are competent. No doubt, very few, if any, in the GOP have a clue.

Oh, and BTW, it's New Rochelle, NY, first founded by the French Huguenots (Protestants)
from La Rochelle, France.

NYers voted for a progressive government and then several Dems split off and formed a coalition with the Cons to give them, the cons, the majority which would otherwise been Dem and Andrew joined them, voting with the conservatives more often than not. In '18 voters headed to the polls with a vengeance and kicked out all the turncoats, but one, thus reclaiming the majority that should've been theirs. At the same time, a message was sent to Andrew and he was reminded who put him in office in the first place.

Just found out my MU J-School fellow alumnus — Charlie Pierce, author of this piece and many, many others — will be the recipient of Marquette’s very distinguished By-Line Award next month. Much deserved, and... it’s-about-damned-time!

Current health-travel restrictions will prevent me from being in the audience to witness this ceremony in-person. Regrettably. I will be there in-spirit, especially if the University can find a way to share this event virtually.

Well done, Charlie! I take back all the mean, nasty, horrible, vicious things I said about you while we were undergrads together.

Full disclosure, Cuomo is my Governor, and at times it's been somewhat difficult to to support him for some of his actions, and reactions, to different causes.

However, in this crisis he's been head and shoulders (and hairdo) above Trump. He's the very antithesis of Donald Trump. Trump is a weak, ineffectual, blame-everyone-else-at-all-costs coward. Cuomo takes full responsibility for everything. Trump takes responsibility for nothing

Our own Gov Newsom doesn't have that gravelly voice, but he has an incredible command of facts. Our day is coming and he knows it. I just wish his friends with the private planes and money for supplies could hurry up and produce them out of thin air. No point asking Donald *Clusterfck* Trump for aid.

Charlie Pierce is spot on.
