I'm buying toilet paper because, if I don't, you'll buy it all and I won't have any.

(25,479 posts)A couple of different organizations did studies that indicated that if everyone just bought what they usually bought, there would be plenty for everyone. It's a matter of hoarding, not availability, distribution or production.

(25,183 posts)to know that the very same situation existed during the 1973 and 1978 gasoline crises. Panic buying created artificial shortages, which created further panic.

(7,639 posts)Look at who they put in the White House and then tell me we should be surprised by this behavior.
By the way, is this happening in other countries???
Even though I've read articles that there is no problem with the supply system, there is still no tp, napkins, paper towels, my last three trips to the grocery stores.
This is absurd. What is it about paper products that Americans are obsessed with right now?

How much do I need to cover how long I have to stay home...??????
MontanaMama
(23,337 posts)The point is, if everyone just went to the store to buy what they regularly buy and didnt hoard it, we wouldnt have a shortage.

(42,641 posts)but if it were obvious, there would be no need to speak about it.

(2,196 posts)Right now is that what people regularly buy varies quite a lot and no on knows how long we have to stay home and be safe.. I would pretty much really would hate to catch this shit because I had to run to the store for tp....We regularly shop once a month and buy what we need then... since no one can be sure how long we will have to stay confined we got double so should be good for 2 months.. wife and i are both in vulnerable group and unless real emergency comes up we wil not leave for at least 2 months now..

(31,261 posts)a friend that manages a grocery store. His friend told him the same thing, if people simply bought what they normally bought, the stores would stay stocked. I was at Publix today, the massive meat chillers were empty. There was a meat department employee standing near an empty re-supply cart, with a stunned look on his face. That Publix is normally well stocked, but bread, nuts, fresh fruit, bleach, toilet paper, paper towels were wiped out. I don't eat frozen meals or vegetables, have no idea what those areas looked like.

(38,187 posts)Most people have a rough idea of how much TP they will need each week or month, depending on how they NORMALLY buy it.
I cannot believe any grown adult cannot figure that out.

(14,628 posts)and now youre suddenly home all day every day, I can see how it would take some time to figure it out.

(11,491 posts)To one 4 pack. Reasonable.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)It was a 6 pack of 400 sheet rolls. I thought that was reasonable. I wish more retailers would place limits on certain items to prevent hoarding. The people who hoard with the intent of profiting off the desperation of others especially disgust me. I would bet my life savings wagering that they were republicans.

(11,491 posts)Today and counted how much i had left, I had more than i thought 22 rolls which should last a long time. We shop at Costco and had just opened new big pack before this started. Hopefully by time it runs down people will be less hoarding or stores better at dealing with it.

(11,686 posts)I buy to for both my mother and I. Not to give TMI but I can not handle the cheap stuff as it rips my skin open. Yes, I have tried everything else. One of the Costco packs last my mother and I about 1 and a half months. Come on hoarders, is that asking to fucking much?

(38,187 posts)If people would look at their budget and past receipts and just buy enough to last them however they normally shop, they'd be fine. Instead, people are going nuts. This is how civilizations break down. It was only a thin veneer of civilization in the first place. People already can barely contain their selfishness normally. It's worse right now, because people are gonna get theirs and screw everyone else.
Of course, there are the lowest forms of human life on Ebay now too. They have TP scalpers there now. There are assholes who are selling single sheets on Ebay right now for a going rate of $0.99 per sheet of toilet paper with outrageous shipping and handling charges added. One asshole took a single sheet of toilet paper and wrote the date on it and put it up for bid as a keepsake to remember this nonsense. Who the fuck wants to remember this? People are also putting single rolls of opened toilet paper up for fucking bid on there too.
So, the ones who are hoarding it are not doing it because they need it. They are doing it to be jerks.
Ebay needs their asses fucking kicked for allowing that and making ALL searches for any TP end up on those single sheet and single roll high bid "auction" search results ONLY. They are just feeding into this. If you scrounge around in the search results and go for a no name brand, thinking it might be possible to buy any, try putting it in your cart. You can't buy it. It will tell you that person cannot accept payment right now. Error state all the way around.
Amazon and Walmart and the rest of the places online won't even allow you to buy any kind of toilet paper or paper towels online any more. Before this, it was no trouble. It was how I always ordered my monthly supply. They are being jerks about it too.
You can't tell me the ones who bought up and hoarded TP did not do it to make big bucks and lord it over everyone else that they have it. That is exactly what they did, just to be jerks. Ebay proves that. Jerks like that need to be in the 9th circle of hell when they die. Hell, create a 10th circle for them and give everyone on all the other levels laxatives and flush everything down to that level on their damn heads.
I despise the human goddamn species at this point. This is fucking stupid to the nth degree. Maybe the human species should be allowed to go ahead and Darwin Award itself out of existence for acting this way. Snakes, spiders, sharks and other hated species behave better than this.

(31,261 posts)Except for wiping my ass, it is the most useless paper that I have in the house. Paper towels are much more versatile, for example. I honestly have never tried to wipe my butt or clean a counter with writing paper, so there.
