Emily Landon, the chief infectious disease epidemiologist at University of Chicago Medicine, took the lectern after Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D), who on Friday afternoon announced that the state would undergo a shelter-in-place order for 2½ weeks starting Saturday evening.
The healthy and optimistic among us will doom the vulnerable, Landon said. She acknowledged that restrictions like a shelter-in-place may end up feeling extreme and anticlimactic and thats the point.
Its really hard to feel like youre saving the world when youre watching Netflix from your couch. But if we do this right, nothing happens, Landon said. A successful shelter-in-place means youre going to feel like it was all for nothing, and youd be right: Because nothing means that nothing happened to your family. And thats what were going for here.
Landons comments were less than 10 minutes of the nearly hour-long news conference, but they quickly made an impression on listeners and drew praise for their clarity and sense of empowerment while still conveying the urgency of the moment.

Video above (it should be queued, but if not, FF to 17:15) - a wonderful talk from Dr Landon!

(7,833 posts)1. Dr. Landon, would you like a job in government?
Perhaps something at the national level? In pandemic response?

I hope the message of Dr. Landon goes beyond a few viewers here on DU, I hope this goes viral! Maybe someone will edit the clip of her and post it on Twitter?
Secondly I continue to be impressed with the leadership of Governor Pritzker, and Governor Andrew Cuomo and Governor Tom Wolf. It seems the Democratic governors are coming forward now, shining the light of caring leadership for our citizens that is so sadly lacking in the Oval Office. Thank you Governors!
