NEW: I just got off the phone with doctors in Bergen County, New Jersey who told me their hospitals are saying doctors & nurses will be *disciplined* for wearing protective gear, including masks. This is dangerous and may be illegal. And their stories are alarming... (1/5)
Hospital physicians tell me this is happening across the state. Nurses worry they could be fired if they wear protective gear, but worry if they dont theyre putting themselves & patients at risk. It comes as NJ has an explosion in COVID cases, particularly Bergen County. (2/5)
.@GovMurphy, please immediately investigate this, and order a ban in New Jersey on such a dangerous practice. No hospital should threaten doctors and nurses with disciplinary action for wearing masks. This is not complicated. (3/5)
I've heard other hospitals nationwide are enforcing this policy, too. Who knows how rampant it is? Some internal documents we obtained suggest certain federal restrictions by the CDC may be guiding this decision. (4/5)
If that's the case, @realdonaldtrump should immediately intervene & prohibit public hospitals from being able to threaten their staff for wearing protective equipment during this crisis, including gloves and masks. This is urgent and common sense. And it will save lives. (5/5)
Folks have been asking for what the explanation is for this decision. Weve been told the hospital administrators are concerned patients & visitors would be unduly alarmed & fearful if they saw health care workers wearing protective clothing & masks. (6)
Of course the other reason for this policy might be the shortage of this equipment. But obviously these front line personnel need it. Heres an excerpt of a document one hospital sent to medical staff: (7)

What are they going to if they fire these people?

(42,003 posts)To be clear, We have many isolation patients we gown and mask for.
They was a nurse originally from China, who brought her own masks and was told not to wear them. She was extremely anxious, terrified really and wanted to protect herself.
The idea is or WAS we dont want patient thinking they are being cared for by sick nurses or doctors.
Right now we are conserving all our PPEs. I had to use an old fashioned tie mask this morning. We are telling patients to reuse their masks. We went back to cloth gowns that are washable. We have reusable googles.
Some units are no longer isolating for MRSA or VRE, as long as its not in a wound.
All elective surgeries are cancelled.
We are not allowing visitors except in certain cases, and then its one person at a time.
My hospital made their own hand sanitizer.

(34,086 posts)The ban on wearing masks is "outside of patient rooms." I read the title, as I am sure most did, to mean they were being told to interact with patients without masks.
We all know the danger does is not limited to patient rooms - BUT - it is orders of magnitude different to be theatened with discipline for not wearing a mask when visiting a pitent with known COVIC 19 v. being threatened with discipline for wearing a mask outside of the presence of a known infection vector.

(11,686 posts)I guess we have to buy protective gear for when we go to the doctor so they can use it while they help us individually.
I would be more scared to see them with no protection. Next they are not going to allow antiseptic.

(305 posts)Nurses are controlling the masks supply.
MDs and medicine residents are having to beg to get masks from them. Our union rep is meeting nursing union rep tomorrow to understand why they think they have supreme ownership of the masks.

(739 posts)This is serious. Not wearing PPE helps people continue with their norm bias mentality.
I would not want anyone near me in medicine who was not wearing a mask. And ideally gloves if they touched me.

(13,873 posts)You seriously think you can analyze the policy better than the hospital administrators who are trying to handle a dire situation.
They are telling people not to waste the limited resources by wearing them outside.

(11,358 posts)these supplies belong to the hospital (or whomever) .. and they're responsible for distributing them (in a time of shortages?), where they feel they can be most effective. That would seem to be somewhat normal in any any organization, or any facility. I would not automatically assume that these directives had no underlying thought or motivation behind them. And .. in almost any organization .. if you have staff running around ignoring the procedures and just doing as they please ...

(61,697 posts)and plop them down in the middle of the triage area, without PPE. Let them get infected first.
Or wipe their hands all over the desk, table , chairs, water bottle, etc in the office where they are being disciplined.
None of this makes sense, so my response doesn't either.

(12 posts)The contamination ZONE is the room. When exiting a ROOM all contaminated gear is disposed to prevent the contamination of the hallways. Much gear will be tossed but the clean zone will be maintained. This is common ANTI CONTAMINATION procedure. People just do not understand good practices versus "running" wild and spread contamination. Wake up people and utilize "critical thinking" out there in wonderland......

(5,478 posts)Don't take the potentially contaminated items into the common areas or into other patient's rooms.
I think that the original tweets just misunderstood what was being asked, and the extract from the guidelines seems to make it clear that these items should not be worn when exiting the room of an infected person.
The OP should delete.

(23,218 posts)My son's GF is an ICU nurse and one day was told to go down to the ER and distribute COVID pamphlets (or similar) to the patients who were ill and coughing. She was told no mask, don't want to panic the public. She refused and left.
She went home and complained to hospital administration and was pulled back into the ICU. With masks in extremely short supply, she was then taking care of very ill patients there with no mask. She's quite afraid, understandably so.
