With hand sanitizer, bleach, alcohol wipes all getting harder to come by, and soap as good a virus killer, might soap also become short supply? I understand dish detergent is just fine. Hm.

(38,187 posts)TP is a bit more difficult to make and so are some of the other germ killing products. Soap is fairly simple to make. I doubt it will make the list of things everyone is having a hard time finding and going out of their minds because of it. If things don't turn around soon, I think TP might become the new unofficial currency though. It's already selling on Ebay for about a dollar a square. One square of TP is equal to a dollar already now.

(26,268 posts)And that was just one among many other things she always said she needed. I was dealing with so much, at the time, I guess I didn't notice. When she died and I went to clear out her room, I found SOOO much soap, deodorant, emery boards, shampoo, band aids and toothpaste. Don't even get me started on the hair pins!!
And since I was paying for everything, out of my pocket, I brought it all home.

(34,136 posts)The one cheap brand that I can use was discontinued. My husband noticed it at Big Lots and for as long as he could get it there, he bought every bar they had.
Since I react to fragrances and to many soaps and detergents I am severely limited on what I can use. Having a good supply is great for putting my mind at rest.
At one point I estimated my usage and I might possibly have enough to last me the rest of my life.

(34,136 posts)Many hotels are moving to having dispensers of liquid body wash and shampoo (or an all purpose detergent) in their bathrooms. It saves on wrappers and those stupid tiny bottles so many chains were using.
I bet twenty years from now people will want to collect those little bars and bottles.

(2,220 posts)I will be able to cash in on the trend. Should I designate these in my will?

(34,136 posts)My husband occasionally goes to estate sales and gets all sorts of interesting things. The last sale he went to he got a stash of notepads, all sizes. Many have the guy's name on them and one group has "SHIT" at the top, which is perfect for making your shit list on.

(4,447 posts)They all do the same thing; they degrade phospholipid membranes, which will destroy both cell membranes of bacteria and also viral envelopes. With the RNA exposed, enzymes that are already present on your hands - RNAses - can destroy the viral RNA.

(31,261 posts)The process involves a good deal of craftsmanship, but a good soapmaker or shampoo maker can whip up a batch in his or her sleep. I am at a novice level, but my interest in on commercial application, so having to learn what works and what doesn't by trial and error is somewhat intellectually stimulating.

(31,261 posts)Not judging, it just that most do your own soap makers use vegetable based long chain fatty acids as the starting blocks. Not that I will use it since I am firmly in the use plant-based materials world, but where do you find the amount of tallow needed for a decent sized batch?
sinkingfeeling
(51,459 posts)went through the long, messy process of rendering my own tallow. Would have about 5 or 6 pounds. The last time, I ordered the clean tallow online.

So these are selfish people who in competing for sanitizing agents, masks etc. do doom themselves and others. Thats how they roll.
