A Medical Worker Describes Terrifying Lung Failure From COVID-19 Even in His Young Patients
... I have patients in their early 40s and, yeah, I was kind of shocked. Im seeing people who look relatively healthy with a minimal health history, and they are completely wiped out, like theyve been hit by a truck. This is knocking out what should be perfectly fit, healthy people. Patients will be on minimal support, on a little bit of oxygen, and then all of a sudden, they go into complete respiratory arrest, shut down and cant breathe at all.
Its called acute respiratory distress syndrome, ARDS. That means the lungs are filled with fluid ... Normally, ARDS is something that happens over time as the lungs get more and more inflamed. But with this virus, it seems like it happens overnight."
In my experience, this severity of ARDS is usually more typical of someone who has a near drowning experience they have a bunch of dirty water in their lungs or people who inhale caustic gas. Especially for it to have such an acute onset like that. Ive never seen a microorganism or an infectious process cause such acute damage to the lungs so rapidly. That was what really shocked me.

(14,961 posts)China, Italy, Iran, etc. It seriously pisses me off that the narrative went from, just the flu to just the elderly and those with pre existing conditions, yet now that it's here and a great danger to everyone, and people aren't paying attention, now it comes out.
I have been paying attention since mid January and have known those narratives weren't the actual story. It's infuriating.

(1,206 posts)Horrifying.
The way some people die of this virus is absolutely awful. Now every time I hear the death toll rise I can't help imagining the suffering and fear that some of the patients experience in their last moments.

(16,180 posts)Its so stupid we dont have testing of all the sick patients and analysis of the genetic variables that make the difference. There has to be clues.

(11,045 posts)The sudden, acute onset of ARDS. This is how SARS got it's name - Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome .

Americans need to know how bad it is.
The article is very very descriptive.
And it will make things a lot more real.
Before I read the article, I thought that I would survive it. Now I'm not so sure.
I am in good health. And I'm still not sure.
I do not think my brother-in-law would survive, and he is in Florida.
